I Want To Start Listening To Jazz

I hear it from time to time, in restaurants or movies or wherever and I almost always like it but I've never bought any or really looked into it at all.

Does anyone here listen to Jazz? I'd love some recommendations. Youtube links are especially appreciated.

I'm not a true jazz listener, but I like the earlier works of Chet Baker, as in before the world invented the electronic organ and forever ruined his music IMO.

Also, the very first album by Everything But the Girl (yes, you read that right) was a great mixture of light jazz and bossanova. There was a UK release called Eden that came out right before the self-titled US version.

The only jazz that I currently listen to is Michael Buble. It's a nice modern twist on come old classic songs. His voice is amazing.

there's a wide assortment of jazz that suits all sorts of tastes, and even the term jazz itself is really subjective. Only reason i mention that is that it's hindered my search...hehe

Got to find that sweet spot. If your looking for that stuff you hear in restaurants, movies, malls etc. just do yourself a favour and look for a jazz collection torrent...you'll find plenty of what your looking for.

otherwise if your on youtube just do searches on the big names such as billie holiday, ella fitzgerald, charlie parker, john coltrane, dizzie gallespie, duke ellington, cab calloway, thelonious monk, miles davis, bill evans, louis armstrong, etc. I'd find all sorts of gems in the 'related' bar at the side, alot of them unrelated to the artist of the video.

I think a good idea would be to post some tunes up that you particularly liked so we could help you out better.

Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus are a solid variety of pretty classic examples of jazz and a good place to start. Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is widely regarded as the best jazz record of all the records, for what that's worth.

For someone more modern, I like the Bad Plus. They have some strong rock influence but for the most part lean toward the jazzier side of things. Here's my personal favorite

My best tip for someone who wants to get into jazz is: start learning to play an instrument.
Jazz then sort of follows by itself.

Try some stuff with Buddy Rich in it, that's the only stuff I've ever listened to cause he's a phenomenal drummer.

While I'm not all that versed in Jazz (yet) I had a similar thing with Blues a few years ago. The way I went about it was to find a few "Essential/Ultimate/etc Blues Collection" albums and note the names of the artists there that caught my fancy.

Then I'd focus on those artists, listening to their other work, reading interviews/Wiki pages/their own websites to find out who their influences were, and seek those artists out as well, etc.

It's a hell of a job to do, but in the end you will likely end up with a nice big list of songs that you love listening to.

As for names, I recently discovered this Jazz Pianist by the name of Ahmad Jamal through a song he did on a Jazz Tribute to Stevie Wonder album and I quite like his work.

Not the hugest jazz-guy, so I don't know much. I just know that whenever I get into the jazz-groove, I listen some Modern Jazz Quarter. That group fuuuuuucking rocks!

I listen to alot of Jazz, and is the genre I play mostly as a bassist. I will gladly help.

I think for alot of people the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack was their first experience with Jazz so check that out.

Next check out the Jazz fusion bands from the 70's - 80's mainly I would say Frank Zappa's Hot Rats album, Weather Report, Miles Davis' later work, Spyra Gyro and of course Jaco Pastorius.

There is alot of amazing modern Dark Jazz, especially the ambient stuff and there are a number of amazing Japanese bands around such as Jabberloop, Sleep Walker and The Soil and Pimp Sessions
