I want to stop pirating games (on PC)

Hello everybody. I do realise that I will probably receive a LOT of flaming for this, but I want to admit to something. I am a pirate. Been one since I was six. It started while I was living in Russia and it followed me when I moved to Vietnam. I pirated EVERYTHING. Movies, music, games. However, I only felt bad for pirating games. I just felt weird about enjoying games that people spent money on developing. Since I am moving to England (university) this September, I decided that I have had enough of it. I am getting a new laptop and hopefully some licensed games of Amazon. Believe me, it IS hard. I am just too used to getting $ 5 per week to pay for my entertainment and scooter fuel. Since my parents are too cheap (not really), I am not expecting it to change after I leave for UK. But I decided to change and nothing (except for sky high prices) is going to stop me.

I know that this post probably doesn't deserve much replies, but could you please post something back? I kinda need some pat on my back.

P.S. I think that I won't stop pirating music though...

Get a Steam account, my friend.

They have sales on games all the time. Just recently they had a sale where I got STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, one of the best FPS games ever, for only 7 Euro, and that was including its sequel Call of Pripyat.

Don't buy games off amazon, get a steam account. Trust me.

Get Steam, Amazon also does cheap PC games as well. The good thing about the PC is the sheer quantity of games available, including thousands of older games that are still awesome and incredibly cheap.

Well, you'll have to stop at uni, seeing as they'll block anything pirate related, and you'll get kicked out if you bypass it. So yeah...you don't need to put effort in now ^_^

Sorry had to make sure you seen this but if you are dead set on stopping pirating and are a PC gamer please check out Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/]. That is probably the best thing out there for buying PC games cheaply if money is your problem. They do insane summer and Christmas sales.

Steam and probably other download services have frequent sales. You can get some really good PC games for 10 bucks or less. If you work while you're in school that should lessen dependency on your frugal parents.

I prefer to have something to hold in my hands. I checked the Steam deals and my enthusiasm wavered. The prices for all releases (even old) were amazingly high. I dunno why, but even Mass Effect that was released quite a while ago cost 20 bucks while I can buy a copy on Amazon for under 3.5 quid. Maybe it is just Mass Effect though..

On your new laptop, get a Steam account instead of a torrent client, and refuse to put the Steam client and torrent client on the same computer.

Good job bud, But there are always some sites that will compare the prices.

A dutch site is a good example (not advertising just helping) www.budgetgaming.nl

I got some games that just were released and for like 20 euro that's cheap man!
It's how I buy my games legally for the lowest prices avaible it compares shops for which has the best price for that game.

Hope you find it in English or something.

Another thing that helped me save money and swim in games for years: Stay about 7 years behind. Games past a certain age rarely cost more than 10 to 15 bucks.

There's a certain amount of debate going on right now about how much more virtuous it is to buy used games, but if you can survive missing out on the latest thing, then the games from 2005 you do buy will run REALLY well on your future-machine.

Good job, I quit pirating altogether a couple years ago(except anime) and whenever I'm craving a new game, I just go on steam and get a demo or something to hold me over until I can get some money to buy a game

Well, I often wait months after a release to buy a game. There are 2 reasons for this, the first insures I can hear from other people if the game is actually any good and the second allows me to wait for a sale or for the price to drop. Patience brings everything to you in time.

And remember, by purchasing the actual games, you are supporting the people who made them so they can get the green light to do more. It is the same with anime, music, books, and movies. So bravo for you. You may have to adjust your habits a bit but it is worth it.

If you want to really cut your costs, you can also try going back 1-2 years in your game selections and playing some of the ones you passed over in the past to allow the new ones to make it into the bargain bins. Or you can buy used games at the gaming stores. (This helps the stores stay open at least and the legal copy was (hopefully) purchased at least once which helped the manufacturers.)

Good for you dude. I dislike people who think they deserve free stuff, but I can fully understand people wanting to supplement a small (or in your case, non-existant) budget with free stuff. Something people forget when blanket disapproving of piracy, not everyone is rich or lives somewhere computer games(/movies) are cheap. As people have pointed out, steam (and others) do offer some great price bargains on games. I WOULD recommend shopping around, don't igore amazon as some have posted. Amazon can well be cheaper than steam. Also try play.com

I just checked Civ IV on Steam. The complete edition would run me $ 39.9 on Steam and 6.95 quid if I buy it online. I suppose I will just wait till Christmas to use Steam.

Digital Download services like Steam, Direct 2 Drive, Gamers Gate and Impulse will often have good sales deals on a variety of games.
If you don't mind older games then Good Old Games is an excellent option and also regularly do sales.

Otherwise look out for stuff cheap on Amazon or Play, whether through them or their respective marketplaces.

I've spent the last 2 years just acquiring massive amounts of games through Steam sales and I never seem to run out of stuff I haven't played.
