Off topic i know but, as far as stealing music goes, fair enough, but go to the gigs, least you can do. =P

Steam is good, but only for the steam specials and the occasional indie game.

Mailorder is cheapest for most things.

Gamersgate, Steam, and www.find-games.co.uk are your friends. You can get games for cheap. I live on a tiny income, and I can always get all the games I actually -want-, if I want them.

Most English Universities block quite a few ports, and some have data caps so pirating will become less of an issue for you. When I was at Uni I couldn't connect to any sort of network, live, battlenet, wow, anything really. Heck some video streaming such as iplayer didnt even work for me.

Depending on your computer, you could go to this site called "Good old Games," where they have older games (Fallout, Beyond G&E) for cheap.

There are tons of free alternatives, particularly in the MMO world.

Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Allods (WoW clone thought the last patch destroyed it the first few levels should still be fun).

A pile of open source games, some of which are even good.

And of course the best game ever made

NETHACK!

Get a Steam account, my friend.

They have sales on games all the time. Just recently they had a sale where I got STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, one of the best FPS games ever, for only 7 Euro, and that was including its sequel Call of Pripyat.

Don't buy games off amazon, get a steam account. Trust me.
this my friend is the answer, I love the sales steam has, i used to pirate things too... then i found steam... and now it is my best friend... mmmm cheap games on sale at like 75-85%off... /drool...

Get your wallet and man up, then.

I can't blame you for wanting to stop, though. Most of the new games out at the moment aren't worth the time it takes to download them.

Ya know, cause it doesn't cost a cent to record and publish an album or film a movie.

If you want to stop just stop, its not like a drug addiction, just unplug the internet or whatever.

Echoing the "get Steam" thing... but, don't buy games when they come out. Wait for the big price-cut special offers that come (usually//eventually) on Steam.

"Nothing (expect for sky high prices" ?

Either you've written that wrong or I'm going to say, "are you shitting me?" If you can't afford it you don't get it. Simple.

Hello everybody. I do realise that I will probably receive a LOT of flaming for this, but I want to admit to something. I am a pirate. Been one since I was six. It started while I was living in Russia and it followed me when I moved to Vietnam. I pirated EVERYTHING. Movies, music, games. However, I only felt bad for pirating games. I just felt weird about enjoying games that people spent money on developing. Since I am moving to England (university) this September, I decided that I have had enough of it. I am getting a new laptop and hopefully some licensed games of Amazon. Believe me, it IS hard. I am just too used to getting $ 5 per week to pay for my entertainment and scooter fuel. Since my parents are too cheap (not really), I am not expecting it to change after I leave for UK. But I decided to change and nothing (except for sky high prices) is going to stop me.

I know that this post probably doesn't deserve much replies, but could you please post something back? I kinda need some pat on my back.

P.S. I think that I won't stop pirating music though...
Sorry but "fail".

You want to stop pirating ... except music, then your still a pirate. A druggie is still a druggie even if he only takes weed.

Work and effort still go into making music, so why rip them off but not game devs?

If you want a pat on the back stop pirating.

Since the OP was so brave as to confess his crimes openly, I will too... I've been a pirate, yes, since 1695. I've robbed countless vessels on the high-seas, murdered and maimed a shameful amount of people, and even dealt in cursed Aztec gold.

But now I'd like to give it all up. Piracy just doesn't have the same glamor to it, seeing as how I share my affiliation with kids who download stuff from the internet.
Yaaaaaarg, a plague on all of you land-lubbers!

Signed, the ghost of Blackbeard.

I have long been a used game buyer and the recent backlash is actually getting to me. With Steam sales and ebay I now have a pile of shame too big to ever complete. So I am considering going all new in my purchases. The one question I have, is the one I ask all former and current pirates, do you really play all of the games? I have hundreds of games for PC and current consoles but I almost never play them and when I do it usually from a handful of favorites. So I would guess most people who pirate games have too many to play so do you do what I do with cheap and used games and just pile them up in case someday you feel like playing them or do you only download games that you will spend a good amount of time playing?
