Fellow Escapists,

I'm currently own a 40gb model PS3 and as much as I love my PS3 the HD is starting to fill up and I've had to start deleting old data that no longer matters to me but soon I will completely run out of space. So with black friday coming around the corner I thought it would be a good time to purchase a 500gb HD so I never have to worry about memory space for at least a very long time. But the thing is I'm not "that" tech savy and even though videos on youtube have shown that the process is simple, yet time consuming, I still have some questions I'd like answered.

1. Will any 500gb laptop HD work? Or do I need to find a specific brand/model?

2. Can I only back up my PS3 data to an external HD or can I just use my 2gb thumb drive and transfer the files bit by bit to my desktop?

3. Will upgrading my PS3 forfeit its PSone backwards compatibility or will it be okay?

Also if you could post links to videos that give great tutorials on how to do this, that would just be awesome.

And if you have done this yourself if you could share your experience with this I would love to know how well it worked for you.

Thank you for your time.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I'll answer the best I can.

1. Any should work, but it needs to be the correct physical size, not storage capacity. From the top of my head I believe it's a 1.5" drive?

2. Sounds like it would work to me, make sure you save the files as the proper directory. IE something like PS3/SAVES, or whatever the requirement is.

3. That should be fine as well, I imagine that has nothing to do with your HD.

Sorry for not knowing the specifics, but I hope this helped at least a little.

EDIT: As far as swapping out the drives, it is very very simple. It took me about 2 minutes and I was being careful. Just make sure you save your old drive in a static bag just incase the new one doesn't work.

Thank you for the assistance.
