Justified if theres chemicals
Heat + chemicals =explosion, to my understanding.

As the laser hits the target then the target area is superheated and flashes into plasma that is then forced into the interior of the target by the light pressure created by the coherent light beam. The internal structure of the target vaporises from the irresistible heat of the plasma and forms more gaseous plasma, which then overcomes the light pressure and rapidly expands (explodes). This happens after the laser has passed over the target because of time delay, i.e. the laser moves at light speed while the vaporisation is not instant as it takes a few microseconds for the target material to vaporise (dependent on density and thermal capacity).

Or like you know via space magic?
I support this theory, it can also be that the laser is supposed to hit faster then light and therefore disappear before an explosion can physically occur. It's just a very weird kind of bullet time basically and serves no other purpose then to tell you "Look at the freaking lasers! They're blowing everything up"
I think Americans and Europeans generally care less about the giant laser and more about the giant explosion so they just immediately skip to that.

On a side note: I don't think anime repeatedly shows the explosion from different angles do they? In some Hollywood films you get about three two-second shots of the blast before it is "official" and the characters react.

For this to be true you had to have worn a lab coat and ether goggles while you typed it. Otherwise, I wouldn't believe that explanation.
Don't reject the possibility that he might be a floating brain in a jar dictating this to his genetically engineered marmoset. That sort of attitude is just discriminatory.

Gundam is the earliest example I have, but I don't think its the earliest.
Astroboy maybe? Cyborg009? Actaully I'm gonna go all in on Cyborg009, that's probably the best example. What do you think?

Damn it man, you just had to go and tell the whole world didn't you. That was meant to be a secret. Anyway you are wrong about one thing! It's not a marmoset it's a weasel...there much better at writing in shorthand and t5hey make better coffee too.

For you more sciencey types you end up with-

A Crapton of Heat + Almost Anything = Explosion.

You obviously haven't put enough thought into these delays... By introducing these totally intentional and non-connection related delays into these games they artificially increase the amount of hype behind these games, the sudden break in the action makes people want to see it more.

Hype is everything within streams after all...

That my friend.. DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!
Why would the stream of a live games delay make it more interesting?
here look at this
Why did I bring chewbacka into this? I don't know, it DOES NOT MAKE SENSE
Think about that for a minute, why would chewbacka, a 8 foot tall wookie, live on the planet endor with a clan of ewoks?
IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!

Possibly Neon Genesis Evangelion? That show pretty much wrote the new rule book for psychological whiny mecha action cliches...
I'm not a mecha expert but I am a mecha enthusiast so I have to tell you NO! Evangelion didn't start with tha laser sweeping explosion thing.
I'm pretty sure there was laser explosion in macross (or the first saga of robotech) and as far as my knowlege the laser thing is far older.

Back on topic, yeah mecha anime (and other kinds of anime) have the giant laser with delayed explosion just as action movies have exploting cars.
Thinking back on Macross, weren't the laser explosions instant? They carried on afterwards as the little flashing balls, but they started as soon as the laser hits.

And NGE was a parody, but no one got the joke. Seriously, the creator put in a penguin as the mascot character... how could no one see it for parody? This is why the follow up movies aren't as good as the series itself. They stopped making fun of big mecha cliches, and just started using them.

#11- Law of Inherent Combustibility- Everything explodes. Everything.
First Corollary- Anything that explodes bulges first.

The lasers make the objects bulge so that they explode right after the laser disappears.

Not exactly sure.
As many people said its pretty old.
I remember seeing it in shows like Tekkaman Blade and Robo Tech.

Huh, that's pretty cool to try and visualize.
