I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

I want to start out by saying i am a huge huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and a huge huge fan of Bethesda in general.

Between Fallout 3, Morrowind and Oblivion, I have lost somewhere in the vicinity of 400+ hours of my life.

I am fan. I am huge fan.

And I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

I want to make it clear, I have been lusting for Skyrim since it was announced. All press I have seen looks magnificent. Everything I have heard sounds incredible. It looks like another brilliant Bethesda game that I will subsequently lose a massive portion of my life and time to.

And I will not be purchasing it.

Because of this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.315129-Mojang-and-Bethesda-Are-Going-to-Court

I will not support a company that attempts to use lawsuits as a means of flagrant bullying and outright douchbaggery in order to crush perceived competition.

If Bethesda goes through with this utter horseshit of a frivolous lawsuit, I will no longer support Bethesda.

Even though this means I will never play Skyrim, I will no longer support Bethesda in any way.

I will not purchase their products. I will not play products of theirs that I already own.

I have already sacrificed 400+ hours of work on Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, deleting the games from my hard drive and removing all saves.

Bethesda will make a hundred bajillion dollars off of Skyrim.

Not a single penny of it will be from me.

Team Mojang.

Wasnt there an extra credits episode on this?
This is not a black & white situation.
Bethesda has valid reasons for this lawsuit.

EDIT:
No wait, not EC but this podcast:

EDIT- clearly hadn't, but i had heard that podcast.

I've spoken to relatives who work in entertainment law and friends in the game industry.
I agree this is not black and white, but I disagree that their reasons are valid.

I have made up my mind.
I'm not asking you to follow me, I won't hold it against even my worst enemy for continuing to support Bethesda; but I won't.

(As a side note, the dev team working on Oblvion, for their xmas bonus, got a huge cash bonus as a reward for how well Oblivion did.
The team that worked on Fallout 3, for their xmas bonus, got t-shirts.
That's not really relevant here, it's just pretty fucked up.)

Very commendable and all, but if you're going to boycott companies with nasty practices be prepared to lose a whole lot more than a couple of Bethesda games.

And then there's this:

Copyright law is nasty business, but with good reason.

When EA decided that the best way to compete against the NFL 2kX series - which was beating the shit out of now-with-updated-roster-Madden by being both cheaper and better - was by buying an exclusive contract with the NFL, in essence forcing their competition into a grave, I stopped purchasing EA games as well.

(Which has been pretty rough, those fuckers put out everything.)

I'll be buying Skyrim. I will thoroughly enjoy the shit out of it until it can't take it any longer. Then I will do it again.

I will also by Scrolls(or whatever name it may or may not become) and do the same to that.

I bet it isn't even Bethesda that is behind this, it is likely Zenimax pulling the strings on lawyers to do this. Usually is the higher up doing all of this legal mess.

I miss the part where I am supposed to give a crap.

OT - As has been stated, I'm sure they have a good reason. And I'm willing to bet that you do buy it at some point.

You are going to play game, designed by the developer team, not Bethesda's directors. And developers are usually those people, who care not for any "lawsuits". So your attempt to boycott Skyrim will be much more painful for you then loss of 60 bucks for Bethesda, who's afraid to lose much more due to tag similarity (and it actually IS a problem for marketing).

On another hand, if you really want to do this boycott, you have to find ALL Bethesda games you own, uninstall them, burn their discs and never event think of re-installing.

1) The guys in suits that decide whether or not to sue people have nothing to do with the guys that actually make the games.

2)If Bethesda don't sue Mojang now, then when scrolls gets released Morjang COULD sue Bethesda for exactly the same reasons. Bethesda would be leaving themselves very open to attack if they didn't act now.

If you followed your reasoning for all companies in the world then you wouldn't be supporting many companies at all, if any.

Power to you... what was the last EA game you bought? Or Activision? Or Ubisoft? Or Squeenix? Or Microsoft product? Or Sony product? etc...

Rather then jumping on a fad train, better start making a list if you want to truly be a gaming activist... since they are all guilty of it fairly regularly.

I won't be buying Skyrim because it just doesn't do anything for me. Not for any legal, moral or deliberate purpose; simply because it is not in my tastes.

I scarcely played Dragon Age (either of them), haven't played Oblivion, won't play Fallen: Sacred Angel 2 and am too much of a wuss to play Demon's Souls or Dark Souls. there you have it, I'm just not a big fan of fantasy games anymore.

Please look at both sides of the arguement; things are never quite so simple. However I supported your attempt to act defiant, just please don't but MW3 or some other such game in an attempt to fill the void that Skyrim was going to fill.

Also despite how awesome it would have been for Bethesda to take Notch up on the Quake challenge if they had, people could just use that as a means of challenging all of the Bethesda's legal standings (e.g. I could rip off one of their games and then challenge them to Quake and because I have the world's best Quake player I would win).

I think the best possible thing would be to let this all go to court and sort it self out; then as an act of good sportsmanship the winners would offer to play a friendly game of Quake (or some other game enjoyed by both parties) to show "no hard feelings". I think the world would be a better place if people did that more often.

Bethesda development team =/= Bethesda legal team.

You're just being close-minded.

The understatement of the week to be sure, but true all the same.

Marketing have evolved over the years to overvalue the PERCEPTION of a company and their products/franchises.

We've reached the point where they are so worried about standing out that they will go to war over ONE WORD in a name (even if the product is of a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NATURE/GENRE).
