I wont be getting Skyrim

When Skyrim comes out on the 11th, I wont be getting it. Not because I don't like it, but because I want to save my hard earned money. Like all resent Bethesda games I'm very sure that the Skyrim release will soon be followed with a big bunch of DLC that I'm going to really want to get and thus buying it when it comes out I know will just waste my money.

So my question to you Escapist is this; with DLC being very, very common now, do you ever wait until all the DLC for a game is released to get it?

I'm an impulse buyer but several of my friends refuse to buy anything not GOTY or extremely discounted on Steam.

However, I expect Skyrim will have enough content to last a very long time.

No, the opposite in fact. I like to beat what comes out at first, then hit the DLC up if I want to play it. When I get the main game and the DLC at the same time, I don't feel like I end up appreciating either of them as much as I would have if I bought them separately.

No, not really. DLC is a nice way to extend a great game after you've done everything and I am usually psyched to get them for games I love.

Skyrim is a day 1 purchase for me, no matter what. I mean come on... it's Skyrim!

I imagine it's going to be a gigantic game I won't even get close to finishing the, what, 130 dungeons did they say?

If it turns out to be good (which is up in the air what with news that they are developing it for console and porting it to PC and making it more "pick up and play") and not ridiculously buggy I will probably get it around launch. These are massive games and I usually don't feel the need to get DLC unless I really, really like a game and have completed the crap out of it.

Nope. I have money (which means I'm a charismatic bastard and people around me have money), so I buy it immediately and get the DLCs when they come out.

Did I mention that I am an impatient prick?

I'll probably get it early.

One of the most annoying things about DLC is when you start a new game, and get a dozen popups telling you about shit your character has no business knowing about.

Sure, it can be fixed by diabling the DLC until you make some headway into the game, but generally speaking that kind of thing is only ever cool on the second playthrough.

CoD releasing a DLC with only 4 maps for too high a price is very bad. But not all DLC's are like that. Besides, Skyrim will get a shitload of free mods for the PC to last a lifetime.

Not buying a game because of DLC's seems a bit too extreme.

I hadn't thought about that...of course DLC will be released and in a couple of years a GOTY edition or, complete edition will be released with the game and every bit of DLC ever.

Even knowing this though, I plan on picking up Skyrim before a complete edition is released. I'm hoping it's an X-Mas gift to be honest.

You see the error in that logic? A by the time you want DLC you'll have plenty of money. The game has 150 dungeons, but it takes months at least for DLC packs to go on sale or whatever, but ultimately I guess it depends on whether you think the time waiting is wort $10 or $20 bucks now. Your choice.

You can buy the DLC whenever you want it. Why do you have to buy it on day one? Why can't you wait a year to get Skyrim? It's not like there's a short window of opportunity and getting it later will make a difference.

Or you could just not buy it, like almostgold said. I haven't bought any DLC for most of my games.
Its cost effective to buy it in the inevitable "GOTY" or "Collectors addition" Pack. DLC and the main game ain't cheap, and frankly I've not got money to burn, Time however I've got quite a bit of.

True that I could just not buy the DLC, but Bethesda, at least I think, make some damn good DLC that I'm sure im going to want to get.

I tend to feel that Bethesda games lack in end-game content... from what I hear Skyrim is supposed to be different but, I'm still not jumping to buy it.

I tend to get to many games rather late so it isn't uncommon for me to start with a GOTY edition or something along those lines. This is a nice perk of having a large gaming backlog but it's unintended.

If I'm really excited about a game, like I am with TES V and was with Portal 2 I'll happily pick it up at release even if I know content will be added later for a price.

Maybe I'm cheap, but I like to wait 'til games drop in price, or I buy them used. This mentality goes towards DLC, too. Unless I'm very dedicated to the series I'm not going to buy a shiny Mcbobbin. They usually aren't worth it anyway.

Its a tradeoff for sure. I debated long about getting New vegas or waiting a year for GOTY edition like I got for fallout 3. Should have waited but I didnt.

Well, there is one other problem.

I got the Knights of the Nine DLC pack for Oblivion, and it included Horse Armor.

Now, that shouldn't be a problem 'cos I just refused to install it, but then Bethesda turned around and said "HORSE ARMOR SOLD THESE MANY COPIES, YAY" ... err, fuck you. Nobody bought Knights of the Nine for horse armor.
I wanna know how many copies of that sold outside of a GOTY version or DLC pack.

Skyrim is looking to be one of the greatest games of all time, DLC or no. I feel like I wouldn't even need it to enjoy the game immensely. I'm seriously going to set a day aside to walk- and I mean literally walk- across the full 16+ mile world.

It is going to be a beautiful game in literally every way a game can be beautiful.
