I would be more interested in first person shooters if they looked like this.

And classic video game aesthetics, homages, and graphics, instead of those ugly modern graphics. With super realistic brown.

I had second thoughts about making this thread. I mean, this thread is so trivial that it's almost like I'm using the Escapist as a blog right now. But it's good enough. It's not like we have a more spammy section other than the forum games section and there's no thread for things like this.

It also isn't new news, it several years old. But still fascinating and you might not have heard of it.
If you aren't aware, this is basically a Doom mod. And I love it. When I first heard about it back in 2010, I tried playing it immediately. But I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. But I kind of wish I didn't. But it looks, really fun, and I don't like first person shooters, so that says a lot.

Now this is what I do love about PC gaming. People taking games I'm not super enthusiastic about, and making them awesome. So very awesome. I'm so happy that people do things like this. I also wonder what other classic first person shooter and other PC games have things like this.

Anybody know of other similar awesome stuff like this, for like, Quake and Wolfenstein and the like? This kind of thing, it's just like, it's just, too amazing. I'd rather play this I think that Megaman Soccer. It looks so beautiful and fun, my God. Things like this make me feel joy.

There are a couple of Quake III Arena maps that mimic original Doom, low res textures and all, but I've not seen many total conversions.

While modern shooters may have that ugly brown, I'd rather have that than have my eyes assaulted by an endless palate of patterned neon colors. I mean holy hell how does anyone stare at that stuff for more than a few minutes and not get a splitting migraine?
Even then I wonder if people truly hate the so called brown/greyness of modern shooters, occasionally games release more colorful maps like Carnival and they are generally reviled for being "too distracting."

Here you go.

I don't think it's coming out any time soon though. The alpha demo released in January and there hasn't been any news since then other than "We're still working on it."

Hmm, I don't really see the appeal. To be honest, that sort of aesthetic makes me eyes a bit uncomfortable. But it could be perhaps I hadn't been a gamer when DOOM was popular.

I've seen this before.
And while I like megaman, aesthetic wise this was a terrible design choice.
I physically hurts to look at.

Does anyone else feel kinda dizzy just watching it? Playing it would be a nightmare

Well, duh. How else do you translate the fuck-you difficulty of Megaman games into a FPS format? Make it so that it actually inflicts physical harm as you play it!

So you want to play DOOM that isn't DOOM?

DOOM had a few thousands custom levels for it, take a google. I'm sure "best doom campaigns" must turn up something good.
Doom that isn't doom? How about Star Wars: Dark Forces?

I disagree. Personally, I am an avid Megaman fan and a long-time FPS gamer as well, but the aesthetic and the colours...clash too much. Maybe if they used less flashier colours and slightly more rounded designs.

Well there is the odd browser game here and there... I can't get the damn thing to work anymore, but Candy Mountain Massacre [http://games.adultswim.com/candy-mountain-massacre-action-online-game.html] on Adult Swim Games is hilariously fun. There were also a huge number of skin, voice and map mods for Unreal Tournament back in the day... I remember most of my LAN matches took place in a sort of cloud palace and the bots were all customized, ranging from Duke Nukem to Bender Bending Rodriguez to Kirby.

You dont need to go this far back in time to find colourful FPS's. Its only been this generation that has been obsessed with brown and grey :p

If you want a colorful modern FPS Halo sure doesn't just have brown and grey or super realistic graphics. Theres also boderlands. Both those games feature feature the whole rainbow without killing my eyes like that video did.

Apparently Halo is too "cartoonish" or "unrealistic" for having a variety of greens, blues, and purples.

People complain about everything, shooters are no exception

Hmm, I see some Doom suggestions here, so let me suggest Hexen. Fucking brilliant game it is. I played it to death when I was really young, and I recently played it again. Gets pretty hard in some places too. Fine game. Never played Heretic or Hexen II though.
