Being the biggest and most succesfull genre in gaming, the typical style of FPS is (or has) gotting a bit stale. What would you add to FPS games to make them feel fresh again?

I'd like to see a decent first person cover system implemented for once.

Playing as a teeny little man armed with a poison dart-gun. With your standard FPS bad-guys as antagonists.
I don't know. I'm tired.

The only reason they seem "stale" is because, unlike most genres, the FPS genre is dominated by best selling sequels. Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield (All of which I like, by the way), etc. are the ones that sell. People are too scared to buy a game that might not be good when they can be assured of what they'll get with those types of games.
With that said, I'd add in a gun that shoots flaming chainsaws and turns people into sheep.

Actually, let's take a step back. I'm sick and tired of regenerating health. It's just boring. Oh, make too many mistakes? Hide behind a wall for a while! Anyone remember the good ol' days of Perfect Dark or Goldeneye 64? You were constantly waiting for that coveted shield or body armour. It was exciting.

I'd love to see some more style as well. FPS's are too realism-based. When I shoot a guy's arm, I want it to fly off in a fountain of blood. When I shoot his face, it shouldn't look like he got punched out. It should look like I filled a balloon with Chef Boyardee and popped it. Gears of War was going the right way with gore, but decided to pass everything under the Filter of Mucky to make the game "gritty". Come on! Look to movies for inspiration. Kill Bill! Hell, even Shoot'Em Up, which despite being a terrible film had action enviable for video games.

Yes, I forgot to mention I'd like to see a game using the same system as Mirror's Edge but with a heavier emphasis on shooting; keep the gun on the person, and let them shoot as they're climbing/sliding/rappeling. Mirror's Edge was boring. But give it guns and buckets of blood, and you've got a recipe for FPS success.

Oh, and can we get like... situational awareness/peripheral vision? I feel like I have tunnel vision in most shooters.

I don't see how that can be achieved using a single standard monitor. It's the limit of 2D screens, I guess. Rather like asking for true depth perception, I doubt it's possible with our current gaming conventions.

Well some games try to help you out like telling you what direction you are being shot at. I understand the technology really isn't there yet but it would be nice if they threw us a bone. For example: why not indicate where and when we hear the foorsteps of an enemy nearby?

Biggest and most succesful? What happened to rpg's and sports games?

Ditch all the realism, limited weapons, recoil, regenerating health, over production, cover systems (even the slowest person can master the art of hiding behind things, you don't need a button to do it for you, seriously, anyone needs a cover system must be dumb), 'story' and other bullshit.

While we're at it RPG elements too.

You have a gun, you have a health bar, you have a level and you have enemies.

Last man standing wins.

A bit like Brink? It might be a bit "consolified", but still.

Re-release Deus Ex with better graphics (and NOTHING else changed).
