They should have vehicles (Tactics had them after all).

They should have more realistic settlements like in the originals with irrigated crops on farms and wells for water.
I would really like this, especially if they made fuel as hard to get as it was in Fallout 2.

As others have said I'd like to see a more robust faction system, and have the game deal more with the political intrigue between towns in a post-apocalyptic world. (Has anyone watched Jericho? Great example)

Start by really thinking through what a post-apocalyptic society would need to survive. Think about what life in such a society would be like, and then create the environment around that model. Think about the economics of subsistence/scavenger living, and think about the sustainability of survivor communities.

I think that's one thing that New Vegas did better than FO3 - presenting a society that actually made sense in terms of population, economics, technology, and so on. For example, places like Big Town are hard to believe in simply because their existence is so fragile. Also, the casualty rates of the Fallout games is way to high for a population that small.

So, all of these things have to be thought through before they start developing the setting.

As for the rest - I wouldn't mind more of the same, really. Maybe a little tighter gunplay in line with that one FO3 mod that added insta-kill headshots and the like. Obviously, engine tweaks to improve performance and graphics. But aside from that, more of the same is fine with me.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot -- more and better factions and factional rivalry. That goes for all Bethesda games.

Rain. It never seems to rain in the Fallout universe (in Vegas it made sense at least). How about acid rain that deals light radiation damage if you're caught in the elements. (Been asking for this for a while).
That actually sounds pretty cool

Remove fast travel, unless it makes sense (like say hitching a ride on a horse or something). Makes the game retardedly easy if I can just fast travel my way around.
Completely agree, fast travel takes a lot out of the game

Go ANYWHERE but in the U.S.

Let's see what happened in China!
There is no where else, everything is gone

A foresty/swampland setting. I live in Northern California, and I was extremely disappointed when I heard they were going to use the most boring part of California (the Mojave Desert) as the setting for New Vegas. Northern California has some awesome forests, headlands, mountains and swamps that could've been used in place of the extremely boring and featureless desert. I would suggest New Orleans as a setting if California can't be used again. People trying to live happy as they can in the city while surrounded by mutated alligators, snakes and turtles in the swamps. I would love a "deadly swamp" setting in Fallout 4.

I want there to be more little settlements and events with their own little stories associated with them. Remember the Republic of Dave in Fallout 3? And that little town with only two families and everyone is a bit too nice, and then after some snooping you find out they're actually all cannibals?

Well, I want more of that but with more varied stories (not just the cannibal one over and over). Stumbling onto a gated retirement place and finding the inside of it completely pristine, even though the security force there seems a bit too dictatorial... Finding a town with only 7 or 8 residents, and one of them is a serial killer - the longer you stay there, the more people die. Meeting another traveller on the road, but the game doesn't force you into that creepy zoomed conversation, the other traveller just stops and very slowly lowers their gun, and you both go on your way without a word. Stopping over in a motel and staying the night, only to wake up three days later in a different town with only a mysterious note...

Stuff like this, but better written

I would love to see them expand more upon communism. For a parody of 1950s America, it isn't mentioned a lot. A communist faction would be awesome.

Am I the only one who wants to move back to the core region? Because while new stuff is always nice I also want to see whats happened there since fallout 2. I mean, It'd be pretty cool to be able to see shady sands and new reno and the boneyard again, especially in first person.

So you want to spend 20 hours of your game time walking through a plain desert?

Here's a great idea, let Obsidian make it. Fallout New Vegas is loads better than Fallout 3. Also let it be in chicago. I wanna go to post-apocalyptic wriggly field and sears tower.

More like Fallout 3, less like New Vegas. Gameplay wise F:NV was a great addition, but I hope it's set near a city with a lot more anarchy. There should be a few settlements and groups trying to control what they can (like the BoS and Enclave in 3) not 2 huge-ass nations fighting over a dam (NCR and Caesars Legion in F:NV)

And for the love of god, don't listen to the people who want it set anywhere other than the U.S. That would completely ruin the games 1950s Americana style.

I wouldn't mind seeing it take place around San Francisco, seeing Alcatraz after the bombs drop would be nice.

Add meaning to the day night cycles beyond clarity.
Sorry I just played Dragon's Dogma and see a lot of missed potential in Bethesda's games...

im with you on the day/night should matter thing but I think they should keep fast travel ( should be togglable before u start the game though ) walking everywhere gets tiresome and tedious after a few times (i've finished dragons dogma and played a bit of NG+ it gets tiresome later one )

I'd like it to be set in the South West around Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico ect. and deal with tensions between the Enclave and the Brotherhood in the area, much like the NCR and Legion.

How about Canada? Freshly annexed right before the bombs fell, we get a bit of a shift in climates - post-apocalyptic snowfields would be interesting, although it'd probably get called Skyrim with Guns.

i'll keep this short, i think a fallout game should involve factions you can join properly(not being they're errand boy). like starting off, or joining a faction. For instance your initial gear and look is based off that of your faction members. being able to betray the faction you joined or double and tripe cross factions. i think that a super mutant faction should let you join them, and if you help them enough they'll call you "Little Brother" throughout quests and the game(takes away character being nameless.) it lets the player be more involved with mutants too.

as joining multiple factions would take up alot of the game such as different quests and different dialogue for each faction the main quest should tie in with the factions.

these are just ideas though
i had moar but i forgot
has to be in america(i live in the UK)
more nat king cole tracks and frank Sinatra not the country music in new vegas
