I myself personally believe if you are below 21 and in the military it should be legal for you to drink. If your old enough to kill and die for your country you are old enough to drink. That is just my opinion though.

I would like to hear other peoples ideas as well. Perhaps get a nice discussion going about different ideas.
21? Bahaha that's funny man.. 21. If I had to wait until I was 21 to go to a bar I'd probably have killed myself by now. 18 in Australia for the win! And yes I believe the legal drinking age should be 18 - not lower.
I think it should be 18 as well but since that won't happen anytime soon in America I say we find an alternative to the rule.
Just a thought. I think that if you're in the Military maybe you SHOULDN'T be allowed to drink. Guns and Alcohol don't mix. Just a thought.

in sweden when you are 16 you can start practice driving cars and i think when you're 16 you should be able to practice drinking!! you will have a Shirt, hat, anything with the word "Practicing Drinking" or something!
Yeah because we really want to mix driving with drinking. I've never met a 16 year old who knows how to drink properly (sensibly without passing out), myself included. Honestly I'm 18 now (the legal age in Australia) and looking back 16 is way to young for a legal drinking age. Sure kids will get it anyway, but it's not like the have 100% access to it.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, kind of thought someone would jump in...

It's best not to assume that every country has the same drinking age, or that all members/readers are American, whichever you are doing.

In the UK it's 18 and that makes sense because that is the age you are legally an adult and when you can live on your own without parental permission and so on.

Whether you lower it or make it higher people are going to drink before its legal for them to do so.
Agreed. It won't make a huge difference, especially in the UK where the police will do nothing more than confiscate it (if that) if you have any while under age.

Not on duty, of course not. But if a soldier is on leave for a month and is below 18 they should have the legal right to walk into a bar and order a drink.

Well that says more about what the age to join the military should be. But on the legal age to drink I think should be higher the human brain is not fully developed till 25 and allowing people to drink does in fact active stunt the brain development. So I am on the side od raising the drinking age not lowering.

Also on a side note I am 21, if that makes a difference
Do you have proof of this? I haven't heard anything about alcohol stunting growth of anything.

And this logic was applied to the right to vote--don't see why it shouldn't be applied to the right to drink! Hell, I think the legal age of drinking should be lowered to 16. What the US needs is a better policy regarding driving. I don't think you should receive a full license until you're 21. Booze is not nearly as dangerous as strapping yourself to two tons of steel and hurtling at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

I agree 100% with the OP. But drinking ages aren't really that big of a deal,

Here's my take on it.
If the US did lower the drinking age to 18, I think for a while there would be a few dumb kids who would go out and get trashed and get thrown in jail...
BUT, if you think about it, maybe kids under the age of 21 already drink. Some of the kids' parent's even BUY them alcohol. After high school graduation, maybe of the students go to house parties and get trashed anyways, so why not make it legal so you don't have to arrest kids on the night of their lives?

Seems like a weak arguement, yes, but I lived in Singapore were the drinking age was 18 and I couldn't see many problems with it. Considering Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, yet the drinking ae is 18 should be reflective on how they handle things.

If the drinking age IS lowered, I think there should be harsher punishments in place for people who are caught drinking and drink or selling alcohol to minors. The more harsh the punishment, the less likely people are to do those kinds of things.

Although, I couldn't care less about the drinking age, I'd rather the GAMBLING age to be lower to 18. When I was in Holland I won 60 Euros in the casino, which isn't bad since I went in with 20. (I was broke). You can't gamble in America till you're 21. That is so lame.

I think if the law decides you are old enough to vote, you should be considered old enough to engage in whatever vices (like alcohol, sex clubs and gambling) that have any form of legality.

The drinking age should be 18, just like everything else is.

I do like the idea that one user posted above: that is, you need to be 21 for hard spirits, 18 for everything else.

Can't have it too low, kids need the bit of time where they go out, get drunk and find it fun because they are not allowed to. Would be boring otherwise and kids wouldn't grow up drinking as much, which is a bad thing as I need people to get drunk with.
