Is it just me that thinks this is a terrible thing? I mean, do people actually go to the cinema without any clue about the film they're about to watch? And what makes it worse is that the cinema actually GAVE them refunds. Would they have given a refund if someone complained that Schindler's List was in black and white? Or that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was subtitled? Actually, they probably would have complained about both those films as well as the sort of person who does is is an ignorant, uneducated waste of skin.

Different strokes for different folks. I'd probably be a bit peeved too if I thought I was walking into a talkie and instead I got silence. Being an art student I'd probably stick around, but not everybody goes in for an artistic experience. They want to be entertained, and if they see the lack of sound as an impediment to that then they're entitled to that opinion. And the theaters are smart to give them the refunds, lest they risk losing them as customers forever.

It's not as bad as it's made out to be.

It was a small number of people at one screening in one cinema in Liverpool that were issued refunds. It could have just been a small group of friends who saw it because they were late for the start of the film they intended to see, so rather than wait for the next showing, they decided to take a gamble on the next available film despite not knowing anything about it.

In reality, small numbers of people do stupid things on occasion at single locations all the time, it's hardly surprising or particular newsworthy.

I kinda understand being irritated for seeing a silent film when expecting a regular one, but..... Wasn't the film widely advertised as a throwback to silent films?. Either they're idiots or they don't pay attention at all. What did they think the movie was going to be about?

That's a foolish thing for you to say. No one is going to go:
"Wow, I didn't go onto imdb.com and ended up paying for a super shitty movie (completely my fault) and the movie theater is repaying me for my shitty action, now I won't watch the new Batman movie there when it comes out even though it is the most convenient theater!"

Sorry, but the owner of the theater was just as moronic as the people who think that you can sue for not liking the movie after buying a ticket. The silent aspect could be swapped for "children", "violent", "feminine", and it'd be the same argument.

I don't think the absence of spoken dialog has anything to do with the quality of the movie, it was a decision that was made like any other.

I was really surprised a few years ago when I went to see a circus performance, and found out months later that most of the audience demanded their money back because it was a Cirque du Soliel-type French circus and they were all expecting clowns.

Heard about this too. I bet the people who work in cinema's everywhere are warning people before they go in now. I don't imbd films before I go see them, but I at least know enough about them to know if they're silent. I don't have a tenner to waste on a movie I hate.

Sheesh, calm down. You act like the money they returned came straight out of your pocket.

Allow me to let you in on a little business secret: The customer is always right. ALWAYS. Even if they're wrong, they're right. It's better to just let them live in their little self-entitled fantasy world than to drive away them, their future business, and the future business of anyone else they tell their story to. I've worked in retail, the food industry, and Walt Disney World. I've reimbursed apologized to more people who didn't deserve it than I could count in a lifetime. But I did it anyway, because their money and satisfaction is worth more than my personal sense of justice and karma. There are a few times when it's alright to tell a customer they're wrong. But in a case like with this movie? Just give them their money and let them go. It's not worth the arguing or the loss in reputation to bother with.

I don't see a problem with what they did; they didn't enjoy the experience so they wanted their money back. Sure it wasn't smart of them to go see the film without finding our about it, but it doesn't really matter why they didn't like it, the fact of the matter is that they don't believe their money was well spent. I would have happily given them a refund if they asked for one.

This is as bad as saying that Casablanca is one long movie cliche'. IT INVENTED THOSE MOVIE CLICHES! IT'S THE ORIGINAL!

This reminds me of something my mum told me; a few years ago she worked at the local cinema. She was working on the box office one night and a man came up to her demanding a refund. The reason? A film critic had given the film he'd just seen 5 stars, but he didn't believe it deserved that score. No I'm not making that up.

Well, there is nothing wrong with what they did, they obviously left the film less than 10 minutes in, and any cinema anywhere will refund you if you do that, and have a complaint. It would be different if they watched the whole film and then decided to get a refund, but it was less than 10 minutes in, they just had time to realise that this movie wasn't at all for them, so they left to do something better with their time (and money) I know about a dozen people who have walked out of films and gotten refunds for various reasons.

These people probably just went to see it on a whim, knowing nothing about it, and realising it was a silent film made in the style of really old movies they decided it wasn't for them, so they left. I really don't see anything wrong with what they did. Anyway, I've done worse, I went to see "Meet The Spartans" on a whim and didn't leave the theatre to get a refund after the film started. Boy, that was dumb of me.

Some people are just shallow. Seriously they can't just overlook one thing and dismiss the entire film over it? Ok yes voices is a big deal why not stick around and see if it's any good without the voices?
I mean this isn't the first time this sort of thing had happen (Sweeney Todd).
