If battelfield 3 fails to take down COD then what other game coming out in the future could.

Well, Battlefield 3 won't "de-throne" CoD because they're two completely different games. CoD is a one-man army game filled with children who don't know how to get along. Battlefield is a team based strategic game with vehicles that can change how the battle is fought.

Come on. They're not THAT different. Lets not make it out to be like BF is Arma2 or something here. lol

I was going for a difference among the player base, not necessarily gameplay. I mean, working as a team works really well in every CoD game, but no one does it because it favors the lone wolf style. Just like going lone wolf in BC2 can do a whole lot, but not many people do it. The people who play and like them are two polar opposites.

Arma on the other hand is hyper-realistic and is only really played by those hardcore fans.

It won't be a modern military shooter, that's for sure. Battlefield 3 isn't going to come close to de-throning CoD's place by being a lot like CoD are you kidding me?

Halo was the biggest popular game for a long time and it took CoD4, a very different game setting to jumpstart the modern military craze we have today and away from a lot of the Halo clones. Sure Halo is still consistently in the top 5 for players online but it was at #1 for a looooong time.

CoD is the most popular modern shooter. Another modern shooter is not going to de-throne it. The PC version of BF3 should have a good shot at being more popular than CoD but for the large majority of gamers on consoles? No way. The difference of quality between CoD and BF on PC makes the choice more obvious but on consoles the games quality are much more comparable. And I'd take the unbalanced CoD over Bad Company's borefest online games.
