We make it ourselfes. Has been like that since ancient times.
They say japan has few, well-known music stars? No problem, make your own!

Wait, what?
Indeed. Literally.

It may not be the freshest news, but the search engine didnt showed me anything alike, so I guess I will just show this around.

Hatsune Miku. Filling huge concert halls, having a huge fanbase and traveling the world in big tours. And she issnt even real.
Her voice is a cumputer generated masterpiece and her body is a 3D laser projection.

What else is there so say, we are just that awsome.

I have a funny expression on my face right now. It kind of looks like a cross between:

=/
and
o_O

Edit: some reason this reminds me of Cortana from Halo. Hologram AIs are going to take over the world...

I like a lot of stuff that comes out of Japan, but this thread really has no discussion value.

Wasn't this the plot of some Disney movie? A virtual singer?

In any case, this is a combination of neat and creepy. Kind of wierded out.

I think the oddest thing about this is how it's been around since early 2000 and Japan is JUST NOW whoring it out here. I honestly wonder if you can find the music creation programs here in American, in english.
There do exist English Vocaloids. They're called the "Engloids" by the fanbase.

i'm both surprised and not. Miku's like the Japanese fiction equivalent of what Jesus is to the Christian Bible... except Jesus didn't sing. also, i'm fairly certain Miku has a bigger standing with English-speakers than Jesus does. (i'm so gonna get flamed for that.) i will admit, that is, to quote Bill and Ted, EXCELLENT! -air guitar solo- now if only Teto and Neru were there, too, i would've loved to watch them dancing around performing Triple Baka. X3

She was actually at AX2011 this year, but when I went to buy my tickets, the concert was completely sold out. That's how awesome she is. Incidentally, I usually make a joke that one of these days Crash 2.0 is going to come around and she's going to gain sentience somehow.

I don't want to start a flame threat, but I couldn't care less about Japanese Culture. I don't exactly hate it as I feel like it has simply nothing relatable about it. I guess out of the probably tens of thousands of anime/manga I can only say I've read GUNNM or Battle Angel Alita because I really liked the setting and the story as I'm a huge cyberpunk/wasteland fan, thus I'd probably also watch Akira and Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex. Maybe even Cowboy Bebop because I saw that listed as one of the best animation features.
However, an animated popstar who's voiced by a computer programm harboring a cult following of millions? I've seen enough of The Matrix to know where this is going.

And by the way, I hate that music genre with a passion. And I like a lot of crazy stuff, like Electro Hip Hop, that horrible metal techno from the early 2000's and good classic music as well as smooth Jazz, but this music doesn't click with me at all. Of course talent went into making this, but it's a machine singing this, it's a machine performing the act on stage. I guess the instruments are still played by humans, but where's the fun in that? I saw Nightwish kill their electronics because of their pyrotechnics and they kept playing anyways, that was much more fun that watching a music video that basically cannot fail. Unless the power goes out or the electronics break, this music will be 100% perfect and always 100% the same performance. I just don't get the appeal of cheering on an LCD display that will always do the same routine, no matter if you are there or you aren't. I've been to concerts where it seems even the band on stage was overwhelmed by the fan's support and you could see them having a great time, how does that work when the star you're cheering on doesn't even exist?

I'm not really seeing much potential for discussion here.
I personally think that the United States should follow Japan's example and replace ALL pop stars with computer programs. I see no downside, pop stars don't write their own songs anyway, they can't sing without autotune and they require a very large sum of money to do what amounts to nothing. take away the human element and just let the autotune be famous, it's doing all the work anyway.
also we don't have to deal with the likes of Ke$ha, Mily Cyrus, Katy Perry, or Lady Gaga (who has talent but decides not to use it so she is part of the problem) anymore.

I think part of the appeal is that it's a less random experience, with concerts there is always the chance that the performer will do poorly or be tired/drunk. The appeal lies within the music itself as well as the spectacle of a completely electronic experience, this is the reason that the Gorillaz and Dethklok can put on fun shows. love of the music and technology, much like seeing a movie rather than a play.

meh, I suppose the Japanese (+weaboos) have their own tastes. Seems like it's just the character that makes up most of the appeal. I'd certainly go to a Mordin Solus concert >_>

Also, almost all nations "make it themselves" when they're missing something. Necessity is the mother of invention.

This summarizes just about everything I don't like about Japan.
I hate when people assume that EVERYONE in Japan is an anime/porn/technology obsessed shut-in.
in actuality most Japanese are very hard-working in the business and manufacturing sectors with a very serious drive to work long hours and live within their means with very little frivolous spending to earn a retirement. Although that same serious drive causes a reaction in the sub-culture to retaliate against that expectation and frivolously buy products as well as take more creative and artful careers while living a very care-free lifestyle.
so to any anime/gaming fans who think you will be more respected in Japan, the people as a whole will most likely hate you and think you are a drain on society. Hate to burst your bubble but Japan is by majority a very serious nation.
Like any nation, there are the hard-workers and the fun-lovers.

Lol, I made no such assumption or made any comment about Japanese people. If anything, you're the one who's stereotyping a country's people while rushing to defend them.

Not a disney film, but are you talking about Simone?

Point of topic:

Yeah This char has been around for over a year now. Honestly its really not all that impressive tech wise as the holographic projection is just scanned cross a plate glass window that acts as a track for her to walk around on.

Now, if they had done it with pure laser light emission, that would have been more impressive. Edit: at least that would give an explaination as to why she glows in blue/teal

Yeah, I heard about this before. Crazy stuff. I miss the good old days when musicians were the stars.
