If Jesus hated Christmas, would you still celebrate it?

So, I recently had an interesting thought, after watching an episode of My Little Pony. If you really, really don't care about MLP, I'll spoil it:

So, the short version is that in the episode "Luna Eclipsed", the princess Luna comes to Ponyville, to visit during the Nightmare Night celebration(aka, Pony Halloween). Nightmare night is basically a tribute to Nightmare Moon, the evil pony who almost covered the world in eternal night. Thing is, Luna WAS Nightmare Moon, until she was turned good again.

After being met with fear and distrust, she eventually declares that Nightmare Night is canceled forever. But, happy ending, she sees light, and brings Nightmare Night back.

This got me thinking, what if Jesus came back, and after being disgusted with the over-commercialization and whatnot associated with Christmas, declares that he no longer wishes anyone to celebrate it.

Now, there's no negative consequences for not doing what he says, he makes as much clear. He simply states that he doesn't think anyone should celebrate it anymore.

What would you do? Would you stop celebrating Christmas?

I don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons. I do it because I have kids.

If Christmas was cancelled then my kids would be upset so, alas, Jesus would have to pucker up and plant a large (no tongues) kiss on my shiny bottom.

So no, no I wouldn't stop celebrating Christmas even if it would save me money. My wife wouldn't allow the kids to be upset and, unfortunately for me, the wife is the boss of the house.

Sod Jesus, he never sent me any presents anyway, the cheap bastard.

I love Christmas, but for non religious reasons.

It's the mince pies.

Always the mince pies.

I'd still celebrate it. Like Rawne and Daystar (and I assume a reasonably large amount of people), I don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons.

That is the best reason. I've never eaten a mince pie, but in my household, we eat our own variation of meat pies during the holidays.

...and now I'm looking forward to Christmas even more this year.

Actually Jesus was never really involved with Christmas to begin with, I'm like 95% his birthday is never actually mentioned in the Bible.

Christmas was one of those Winter Festivals where the Church said, "You guys convert, and with a few exceptions, you can keep this holiday, we'll just repurpose it"

So if Jesus came back, he probably would hate Christmas, and I would be all like "Whatever bro, I got Egg Nog!!!!!"

I'd say that he, like many who bemoan the commercialization of Christmas, miss the underlying point the commercialism masks: a sense of interconnectedness and goodwill, which in turn has led to some of what I would consider to be the more beautiful moments in modern history.

Well I don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons anyway so nothing would change for me.

If Jesus came back, he'd probably be a bit too busy bringing about the apocalypse and whatnot to worry about Christmas.

But, for the sake of the hypothetical situation at hand, I'd probably be say "Uh, sure Jesus. No more Christmas. Since your physical existence proves that the stuff in the Bible is true, I think I can put my lust for big boy toys away for the sake of not pissing you off. Who needs an Xbox anyway? They have plenty of those in heaven, right?"

That's...a rather interesting question. I would have to stop, of course, because of my beliefs, but I've never really thought about it that way. I wonder if I'd still be allowed to give people presents and see the excitement it brings them. I really like giving people presents.

Well, like everyone else, I don't celebrate it for religious reasons. I see it as a "Winter Solstice holiday to give presents and practice charity" sort of thing. Anyone can celebrate Christmas; and no I don't think the name should be changed just because it has "Christ" in it.

Seeing as I'm agnostic, its likely that I'd believe that guy was just some dude pretending to be Jesus - as he probably would be. With that in mind, screw off - I want my presents and there's nothing some crazy nut is going to say to stop me. I don't celebrate Christmas because Jesus told me too/was born/W.E, I celebrate it because I get presents, and its a good time to meet up with other family members and say hi.

I'm a Christian, and I would celebrate Christmas even without the Christian connotations. Heck, I enjoy the early germanic/yule traditions just as much, maybe more (*guilty look*) than the Christian traditions, especially considering that most of our traditions are indeed Yuletide traditions.

Though if Jesus came back, as someone already said, I think he would be a bit busy bringing about the end of the world to bother about a holiday.

I love Christmas because it is one of the few times of the year that my family actually gets together. As for presents and all of that jazz, I couldnt care less. In fact coming up with gift ideas for myself on top of buying presents for others is stressful.

So while Jesus might not like the horrid commericialization of his birthday, I think my intentions are pure.

Screw Jesus, Santa is where it's at. He'd come up from the South Pole with his cheap labour elf army and take Jesus' place at the right hand of the Father, now and forever, for the sake of Christmas.

Just kidding. If Jesus came back (and decided for whatever reason not to start the apocalypse) maybe I'd become a Christian, but that doesn't stop me from thinking taking Christmas away is a dick move. It's not about you Jesus, stop spoiling everyone's fun just because you're not the centre of attention anymore.

(That said, I'd be a bit pissed off too if my birthday was used as an excuse to make small children believe that a fat red man can get into their house and eat their food without anyone noticing. That's nightmare fuel.)
