If Mass Effect 4 was to be Squadmate focused

I've been playing and reading a TON of Mass Efffect lately and I've been thinking of where they could go from here with the old squad if Bioware chooses to follow the characters a little farther. If the next Mass Effect was focused on one of the squad mates who would you prefer? Temporary squad mates count, Shepard does NOT count.
My top 5 would be:
1. Garrus (duh)
2. Liara
3. Wrex
4. James
5. Aria

Can they make something that doesn't shit all over itself in the last 15 minutes?

Why yes, I am still bitter about that.

1:Garrus
2:Tali
3:Wrex
4:Grunt
5:Wrex

Where else could they go tho? I'm not ready to let go of the old squad yet. Even if they did go ahead in the time line I hope they keep Liara alive as the Shadow Broker
Regardless they'd have to pick 1 ending of Mass Effect 3 to canonical which could be messy...

I wish they stopped raping the series. ME1 was an awesome game, but then we get human reapers, lazarus project and all such nonsense in ME2. Then ME3 comes and we get deus ex crucible and of course that horrid ending. They did a good job when they focused on characters, but everything after ME1 that had to do anything with reapers was a mess. That's why I hope Mass Effect dies before EA ruins it even more.

1. Garrus. He's the action-hero, it's very natural to think of the sort of things he's doing and he's Turian.
2. Tali, she'd be a nice change up of protagonists and she Quarian which would be interesting. (Also quite cool to have a techy)
3. Legion - I don't know how they would make it work, but Legion rocked and it'd be interesting to get a geth perspective.
4. Mordin - It's hard to see Mordin be quite so actiony, but he's got an interesting mindset and is Solarian.
5. Zaeed or Wrex - They're both a little gruff and maybe a slightly too dumb or placed badly in the universe to see it working out as an adventurer (Wrex was all about long term goals by the end), but they're fun people.

Bad choices
1. Miranda, Jacob, James, Kaiden. They're human which is boring and their personalities aren't very dynamic either. Ashley is a little less boring, but also human.
2. Liara. Bland personality, and the Asari are the one race I don't particularly care to learn more about. Darn space elves.
3. Samara, a little too mature and a little too crazy to work out. Also an Asari.
4. Thane. Thane technically could be good. The drell are interesting and his line of work is interesting (although it would mandate ME4 as a prequel) but I think he's a little too nice for it to work out.

But I can't really see it happening, there's too much potential continuity snarl and Bioware games have always been power fantasies about a person you created, I don't think they could pull off a MGS2 and they couldn't pull off a game with a defined protagonist without losing a lot

I don't think there's any possible way to make that kind of game good. If it's a sequel, that opens up obvious problems since the endings had wildly different consequences. And a prequel would just succumb to the usual problem. If it's about Garrus, for example, it'll end up being about something Garrus did that was even more large-scale and epic than what he did in the subsequent Mass Effect games. It won't make any sense.

That being said, there are some angles I'd really like to see:

1) Salarian STG - play as a hyperactive spy in the universes most highly developed intel organization? Yes please!

2) Human Hacker - Think about how quickly an event is recorded and put online in the modern day. I'd love to see a character who got footage of Sovereign at the end of ME1, is unsatisfied with the explanation by the Council, and connects to a network of users sharing similar info.

3) Drell detective - I guess any kind of detective would be cool, but Drell make everything cooler.

4) MERCENARY - This one more than anything. I loved the "Archangel" mission in ME2, because I threw on a helmet and pretended I was Boba Fett looking to make a quick buck with my gun. The smuggling and mercenary underworld is ripe for stories - you could run an entire game on that setting alone. And the moral choices a criminal is faced with seem more interesting to me than what you'd encounter as a space marine. Like Bob Dylan said, "If you live outside the law you must be honest". This is what I'd like to see more than anything else. Or -

5) Blasto

I have a hard time picturing any character spin-off actually happening, but if there was, Mordin's STG days would make for one of the more interesting background stories.

If it was a title that focused on backgrounds of multiple characters I suppose we could always see some of Tali's pilgrimage, or Garrus's time at C-Sec.

Not weird, a lot of people shared your view. I agree, I think they should drop the squad from prominence- but include them. Maybe as references or just NPCs, to remind us of them.
However I also loved the crew so wouldn't want them ditched completely. However, I think the main squadmates were mostly too far down their careers to have much of a future afterwards that would be gameworthy, so I would look at the more distant crew.
1. Joker
2. Trayor
3. Kelly
4. Cortez
5. Kirrahe
Although I realise some of these characters can die...
My main idea was it to be some smaller agent investigating something, maybe in Omega L.A. Noire style or working for C-Sec. All I know is if they try the scope and scale of ME3, the game will flop.

I would be fine with either this, a completely new story that ran parallel to the games or if they did a prequel, I just want more Mass Effect.
1. Garrus
2. Liara
3. I'm not sure if this really counts but Commander Bailey, I think it would be cool if they provided some context for what happened when the Citadel was taken and during the Battle for Earth if they showed him leading a resistance on the Citadel.
4. Tali
5. Wrex

ME Noire?

I also would prefer a different angle, in a different time period even. They could pick one of the endings as canon (like they did with some choices in ME1&2) and build from there. It's the simplest choice with the most possibilities, imo.

Well I would like to see them abandon Mass Effect now the story is told and work on something new I enjoyed 1 and then 2 as well although a lot less as for 3 well after finishing 2 on insanity I felt I was done and couldnt be arsed to get 3 I just didnt like the direction it was being taken although I liked Tali in the second game and didnt really care for her in the first one.

Out of all the companions I only really liked Wrex and Tali (ME2) so those two would offer the most interest to me personally. I could not freakin stand Garrus though I hated him in both the games he just seemed a complete prick but it seems I am largely alone in my opinion of him but Garrus died at the end of ME2 anyway so I guess he cant be included in any future games anyway (yes my game is canon).

You know who else I'd like to see more of? Okeer, the Krogan who created Grunt. I ended up loving Grunt, but the first time through ME2 I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to see more of Okeer. A Krogan mad scientist? There was meat in that story that was never properly delivered.

I don't think ME4 is a sequel, but a spin-off in the ME2 days featuring a different hero.

This! Or Wrex's mercenary days. Both have really interesting stories that still have areas to explore.

I think one of the big problems is that of all your various crewmates, Liara and the newbies for ME3 are the only ones who are definitely, canonically alive at the end of ME3. Sure, you've gotta work hard / screw up bad to kill off Garrus or Tali or Grunt but it's still possible. Maybe they treat that the same way they treat the Shepard dying at the end of ME2 case but still, it's problematic.

That said, in an ideal universe where there are no continuity problems any of these would be cool:

- Wrex
- Grunt
- Liara
- Garrus

TBH though, while I'm likely to play the game whatever direction Bioware decides to go in, I'd rather see them go with some new material in the same universe.

If they gave us temporary squaddies?...I dunno, I think the next ME shouldn't even be called Mass Effect 4, it would only bring painful memories. If they do bring an old squadmate it would be Wrex, because if it's a prequel it would probably make sense. Maybe Mordin, in one of the STG missions.
