If OnLive works as promised, do you really think it could replace the home console?

I have to wonder, how much money would be lost if OnLive flops? It could be one of the biggest financial disasters that DOESN'T have to do with the government.

In the UK, boardband speeds are woefully low (8 Mbps is the typical for an area), so I doubt OnLive will really work here for a few years yet. Assuming OnLive actually works. Which is questionnable.
if it works like they say 8mbps will be enough. it will have to work in usa before they buy more servers around the world.

like i said in mac thread in onlive works I will never have to deal with another windows error/crash since I can game on a simple and light mac laptop.

Well, we'll have to see if it works then. My gut feeling is that the lag effects will be too much too regularity for an FPS or anything else beyond TBS to be honest.

Well, after reading through many documented interviews, I believe I've figured out enough to give people a good idea what OnLive will cost.

For Mac/PC: Around $50 for a 1 year subscription, not counting the added costs for games you choose to buy/rent in that year.

For TV: In addition to the $50 a year subscription and the cost of games, you will have to pay for the OnLive MicroConsole, which was said to cost significantly less than a Nintendo Wii, but an exact price has yet to be confirmed.

I just hate that, say I decide I'm going to download a massive file. I want to play some single player games, but oh wait I can't because now I have no bandwidth!

No, it will not. simply put, it will be nicer for somethings, but just like the tv did not kill the movie, this will not kill home console gaming

The concept of OnLive is great, not having to clutter your desk/living room with game boxes and consoles is nice but I won't ever use it because I like having control of my games and software. Also, I think it was penny arcade that said it, in some cases you can't get online when you travel. I know for a fact that I'm not going to pay to use the internet in a hotel to play my games when I could just as easily take my xbox with me and just hook it up to the TV and not worry about it.

The closest thing I'll use to OnLive is Steam and that's because I can still play offline if I so choose.

Dude. I have an 8 Mbps net. And that's a LOT. In my area, most people have 2-4 Mbps.

I'm really happy I didn't buy Xbox or PS3. I won't have to now xd
I got 20 in my area but compared to some countries thats painfully slow
Don't complain... I have less than 1MB, and that is the average here. The top speed is 4MB...

And I guess that answers the TC question.

Maybe I was missunderstood, in which case, I apologize. But my point is that there are a lot of countries were that is blazingly fast.

while i have no clue in hell what onlive is, i dont think anything will replace consoles anytime soon. shit, pcs have been trying for the last 20 or so years and still havent succeeded. but yeah, weather it is successful or depends on if it does what it say it does (im goign to go goole/wiki it now)

Thank you for your self-proclaimed uneducated opinion on something when you don't even know what it does. For all you knew it was a toaster oven. I suggest in the future that you educate yourself THEN post.

Not at all, though I think that it may make the PC a much more prominent adversary of console companies.

The way I see it, OnLive won't allow mods to games, and indie games will have a hard time getting on the platform, mods and indie games are at the leaset fun, and at the most - a great way for people to discover new things, and they are inexpensive, spteam allows mods, but OnLive will not (as there's nothing to install the mod to)

What I question more than anything else is the cost of the service.
This is something that'll put OnLive in limbo: the idea that you make regular payments for access your games. There is the arguement that you're paying to use their hardware, but I'd personally rather shell out a couple hundred for my own console every 8 or so years, which will be more reliable and better quality.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's part of the reason that I stopped playing PC games. The cost to continually upgrade my PC was prohibitive.

On the other hand, if it's something like $100 a year, I would consider spending my money on it.
