If OnLive works as promised, do you really think it could replace the home console?

It might. A lot of variable could make that ship sink or swim.

BTW if you hate gaming with a keyboard you can always use switchblade to use a console controller, relevant since OnLive is computer based.

If it works, it might put sony and MS out of the business unless they evolve, but Nintendo will survive because I doubt Onlive is going to have anything but a standard controller, and Nintendo sure isn't going to let its 1st party franchises be compatable with Onlive.

In fact THE most threatened market if Onlive succeeds is PC gaming hardware manufacturers.
This I can definitely agree with. As I said, Wii, PC and Mac owners are probably the only people I can see buying this and loving it. If you own a 360 and/or PS3, I don't see why you'd want OnLive. They'll have to do something crazy in order to get the 360/PS3 fan's attention.

not really same amount of pocessing power is needed, pherhaps more. aslong as people are playing computer games there's going to be demand for hardware manufacturers. they prolly can't rip people off as much tho.

I would never quit console gaming for PC gaming. I always thought as the mouse and keyboard controls for people who are to stupid to use a fucking controller. Damn, I'm going to get a lot of hate for saying that the PC controls suck!
That made so much sense I declare you president of your ass. Serisously console controls have like 8 buttons and then the kayboard has over 40+ buttons to use so which is harder? REALLY? There is the door now walk through it.

Do you actually get 54 mbps or is that just the "up to" speed? I've lived in several places and the speed of my cable internet connection never lives up to Time Warner's (or anyone else's) claims.
Yeah Time Warner is a company founded on lies. I rarely get the speeds they claim.

Hold on... I pay for my games, then I have to pay to ACCESS my games? And what about if I cancel my subscription, I lose my games? Umm... No thanks there guys. I would rather like to actually own things I am paying for.
Edit: Then there is the fact that I have to keep paying for it year after year after year, which will end up being FAR more than the cost of a console.

No. Not only because it's almost impossible to pull off, but because there's far, far too much money to be made in PC parts/consoles. There's no way that these companies are just going to allow themselves to become obsolete.

Plus, I, like many people, like actually owning something we pay for.

Actually I think the HD consoles are going to take the serious hit, especially after the next generation of consoles hits, that's where people will just use Onlive instead of upgrading to the new Xbox 720 or PS4 or whatever.

Onlive's potential pull at these gamers is the fact that if Onlive works well they will never have to upgrade their consoles or PCs again.

Sony and MS will have to innovate and evolve, they may have to get really stingy and make first party exclusives to survive, relying on 3rd party support is going to make them drown once this generation of consoles is outdated.

Nintendo weathered 2 generations on limited 3rd party support, it's their first party franchises that will sell consoles and keep them afloat, not to mention their innovation.

PC gaming.. well.. depending on how Onlive is set up, PC devs might get a cut of the dough, which would help but otherwise if this thing really takes off.. they're up shit creek I can tell you that.

Actually since it's a stream, you can play high end games over a low end computer.

I'm probably wrong but I doubt that there is any game that uses more then 40 keys. Also, it's not that hard to play a first person shooter with a controller.

Aiming with an analog stick is just.. unsatisfying and shitty.

Actually the best controls for FPS are the Wii's controls if only the rest of the hardware could handle it.

There may not be any games that use more than 40 keys, but there are hundreds of games that need more than eight buttons. Not to mention the fact that the analog controls make turning quickly impossible, and precision aiming difficult. [/offtopic]

Onlive will not replace consoles, PCs or any other form of entertainment because it simply won't work as advertised. Even if they can get past the technical difficulties (ever tried encoding 720p in realtime several thousand times over while running crysis on high settings?) there will be the issue of a monthly subscription that will probably be in excess of $30/month.

I don't see a Phantom console achieving this in this generation. Wait till we get more broadband speed, and bandwidth is cheap is dirt.

No, even if it does work then it another service similar to Onlive will come along. Then it will be a battle of games. Onlive will get Halo but the new service will have Metal Gear. Its really just what we have now, only you can play RTS games on it without crying from console controls.

I don't think it will -replace- the home console, but it will become the mightiest of the console market. Because most people would rather buy one console than three, we will see Onlive dominate the scene with other consoles numbers dropping a good amount. There is a theory that Onlive will make this the last console generation, but until broadband is universal I think we'll still have plenty of consoles to choose from.

If it works, of course it will, everyone with a credit card and a solid broadband will be able to play the hot games without any good hardware, finally everyone can enjoy the... well, JOY! of PC gaming.

Then we have the tech guys, who will continue to upgrade their rigs, and the console purists, who will continue to be stupid, so no, it won't "replace" them.

Way to contradict myself, I stand by both statements.

my point is that its being streamed from a high end computer/server. hardware still going to be needed.

Yeah but individual consumers won't need to upgrade their computers as often.
