{Achtung! Long post ahead! Also, I apologize in advance for the dreary picture. For some reason, I seem to have a knack for coming up with a lot of rainy dystopias.}
I looked out my apartment window and sighed. Rain again. Not that it really mattered; no one in Escapopolis really went outside. Technically, that wasn't true. The console wars had flared up again, and anyone with an iota of sense stayed inside on days like these. The gangs would assault absolutely anyone, and the rain only made it harder to see them coming. A blue light streaked past my window, closely followed by a white one. A red light was pursuing both of them. If there was any justice in the world, the red light would catch up to both of them, and those particular lights would not be seen again.
I let out a dry laugh. Escapopolis. The name made the city sound like a paradise. Nothing could be further from the truth. Between the console wars, the constant flames, and the troll attacks, the city was closer to a dystopia. It wasn't all bad, though. There were a couple of deep-think tanks, and quite a few celebrities. One guy with a funny accent even made it to the top-tier broadcasts, if you could believe that.
Unfortunately, most of the citizens didn't do much else but live in the city. Some barely that, based on their broadcasts. I was one of those people who, I had to admit, weren't big contributors to the city. Sure, I won an award for my first broadcast, but after that, I mainly sat back and let other people to the casting. Isn't that everyone's story, though? Find your niche and occupy it. With all the new citizens being added every day, though, even that was becoming difficult. I doubt anyone knows exactly how many people reside here now, save the elites.
I was snapped out of my almost trance-like state of thought as my phone rang. It was my friend Rob, asking "where in the warlock-forsaken world" I was. I deflected by inviting him to come over on Sunday to watch the Doctor Whom marathon. Sadly, he declined. Sighing, I turned on my computer and went to my favorite site, the Realist. I spotted an interesting thread, titled "If the Realist Forums were like a city..." I thought for a bit, cracked my knuckles, and began to type:
