I'd actually like to poke some holes in the arguments of those who answer Pokemon.
1. Pokemon who were just trying to beat the snot out of your 'mon will suddenly obey when captured. This suggests mind control.
2. In Pokemon, the only challenges you face are pokemon battles. Personal challenge doesn't seem to exist beyond a few mini-games.
3. It is apparently common for young children to be thrown out into the world, forced to walk on foot to neighboring cities.
4. Less skilled trainers often have their pokemon faint. Those trainers then faint too, and are brought to a pokemon center after being robbed.
5. The only way for a trainer to get money appears to involve using their pokemon to mug other trainers.
6. Familial splits are apparently normal in Pokemon. I don't recall the main character ever having a father.
7. Medical research in the Pokemon universe appears to be based on a model of communism. This model fails to reward innovation.
8. The police in the pokemon universe are almost always inept at best and obstructionist at worst. This leads to a might-makes-right mentality.
9. It would take about three days for the Nerd Reich to find, breed, train, and possess optimal pokemon and begin oppressing the rest of us.
10. No one ever dies or has sex in the pokemon universe. That means a static population, forever. Stagnation would lead to madness.
So, there are ten good reasons I'm going to stick with my answer instead.
