Would you buy it? What would you expect from it? I've only ever played two Metroid games and I don't currently own any but I think I would buy it. I really enjoyed Zero Mission and I once played halfway through Fusion. I plan to pick up a copy of Super Metroid at some point so I can try it out.

So if there was a Metroid 5 or something for the DS would you buy it?

Hell yeah. Not so much because I really need a Metroid fix, but because my 3DS has a tiny library. A follow up to Fusion would be neat.

Assuming it doesn't go in the same direction as Other M (which I despised), I can get on board with that.

However, I also wish someone else would take a crack at the Metroid formula; the only other games that I know of that have done this in recent memory being Shadow Complex (great game, but exclusive to XBL, and I don't own a 360), and Cave Story (which honestly reminds me more of Blaster Master mixed with Megaman than Metroid).

Metroid is a great series over all (again, Other M being the only serious low point), but I'd like to see more series like it in terms of mechanics.

This.

Other M was an abomination. Every Metroid game that comes after it (if any do; there's a good chance that it killed the series) will be tainted by what Sakamoto has done. The man should be caned.

Probably give it a shot, I kinda stopped buying nintendo games right before other M came out (and judging from what I've heard about it I saved myself 50$) but I might get back into nintendo for the lovely Samus Aran kicking ass.

A friend of mine mentioned he's considering that whole game non-canon because it wasn't made by Nintendo's first party teams. I haven't played it myself so I can't judge.

Well, speaking as someone who's first experience with Samus was Metroid Prime (Or, Super Smash Bros, but I don't count that...), I'd say...
Nah. I'm not sure what direction Samus should go, but I don't think chopping a dimension is the answer.

Fuck yes. Every 2D game has been great, Super is one of the best SNES games and one of the best 2D games I've ever played.

Especially if Retro made it (which seems pretty likely). I would preorder that shit before they even announce it.

Yes but not on a handheld. Throw it on XBLA or steam and sure.
...You do realize that Metroid is a Nintendo IP, right? And that Microsoft can't even use the name "Samus" in anything ever, right?

The two-dimensional Metroid games are actually rather good; you should give them a try sometime. Having played those and Metroid Prime myself, I can say that both 2-D and 3-D are good (usually), but they do lend themselves to different styles of gameplay.

Hell yeah, but only because I want another side scrolling shooter in general. You don't see much of the genre, which is a damn shame. Metroid did it best, so hopefully, if one were supposedly to be made, more will sprout. And I will be happy. :D

This is my thoughts exacly.

Other M was terrible . But i would be willing to look past that and buy the next metroid game . All the other metroid games were great so i'm going to classify Other M as a fluke, a very very bad fluke , everyone has their off days .

Oh I've played some of the 2D ones. Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission are some of my favorite GBA games, though Super Metroid and the original just seem dated at this point (But I'm not allowed to criticize Super Metroid, am I? People don't like it when I point out how much better the other ones are when compared to it.)

metroid prime 3 (and I assume the rest of the prime series) were awsome

I dont see how super metroid is dated...it plays and looks as good now as it did then (unlike say those awkward 3D games)

I generally have trouble getting into older games, but super metroid reallly had me hooked

Wait...you've never played Super Metroid? Assuming you have a Wii, it's only like 8 bucks on the Virtual Console. I wholeheartedly recommend it, as it's the best in the series in my opinion.

OT: I don't think a Metroidvania really holds up as a boxed console release in this day and age, but as a digital distro or handheld release, I could totally see it happening, and yeah, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, because I'm just a sucker for the Metroidvania subgenre.

You haven't played the other Prime games? When there's a compilation reboot for the Wii?
For shame.

For the record, Metroid Prime 3 really disappointed me. Like, everything in it just felt...wrong. Metroid Prime 2 did so as well to a lesser extend, but I suppose when you have to compare them to Prime 1, most everything is disappointing.

Absolutely. Every one I've played has been extremely well made. Super metroid is my favourite and though it's dated I feel the underground organic feel is superior to fusion's simulated environments.

What I do hope for is the dark and horror turn that fusion brought. Seeing that silhouette flying around the nocturnal habitat sector 5 was sincerely scary and I especially hope Nintendo diversifies a little and actually springs for the mature rating. That would seriously help open up the scary and gory elements. While we're on the horror topic I'd like to see things similar to the SA-X but not scripted. A monster that actively stalks you in real time and could be encountered at any moment.

I liked the openness of super metroid but I don't think that fusion's linearity was automatically condemning. I found showing us the individual environments one by one then stopping and giving us free control over where we went and shortcuts in between the sectors was pretty effective.
