If wars were still fought with blade and shield...

Frankly, I'd think we'd be seeing swords much like what's found in the Final Fantasy and Xenoblade games. Those things look so cool!

We might also have swords that have little "thorny" spikes on the blades and hidden blades (not as in Assassins Creed) that pop right out along with the main blade, much like a giant pocket knife.

I've also imagined a sword that had a circular blade with a large, clean hole in the center.

We could also have two-headed swords. Not with one blade on one end and another on the other, but having the two blades parallel, like a double-barreled shotgun, but in sword form. But, who's to say it should stop at just two? And then, there's the case of swords with flexible whip-like chain-type blades of some sort. Ivy from SoulCalibur carries a weapon much like this.

Oh, and how can I forget Agent Six from Generator Rex?

I think it would be pretty cool, it would even out the nations quite a bit, nobody would be too superior but it could end up being horrible since the best way to win would be to forget about advancing society and just breeding as much fodder as possible, less technologically advanced societies would wipe out the ones who didn't focus on warfare. We'd probably be worse off but if it ended up shaking out with a even advantage for every side, it could be pretty great, I feel like adventuring would be awesome.

Well I figure swords would be GPS guided and play MP3s...or is it 4s now? I can never keep up with this crap.

I think its the nice thing about guns.

I would take a bullet to the dome over laying in a field slow bleeding out from a massive gash on my shoulder any day.
This.
Although melee combat would be a bit more balanced, some of the time's a wound would not kill the person, but leave them incapacitated. Having to lay there and slowly die would suck...
And assuming that the swords would bring medieval medicine, there wouldn't be many means to prevent wounds from being infected. At least if your shot with a non lethal wound you would stand a chance, modern medicine can work wonders

Hate to break it to you, but artillery would still be king without explosives. It was already king in medieval times. Imagine the ordinance we could put into a trebuchet with modern manufacturing techniques... lead shot rain, steel wrecking balls...
and longbows, composite longbows firing composite arrows with carbide arrowheads, man... a life could and would be lost just as quickly and randomly as with firearms and explosives, it would just take more strength and skill to use the weapons... and more time to reload 'em.

As for me, I'd be less militaristic. I actually prefer the stealth, range and ease of use of our current weapons systems. I can use a longbow, but it's kind of a pain. I'm half-decent with a few types of sword, but I prefer them as a hobby to an actual fighting art. Plus, I'm kinda mid-sized of thicker than average build... I'd probably wind up as a cannon-fodder footman. Screw that.

you do know most people who get shot in war die from sepsis, shock and blood loss... it's not really any faster than being stabbed... tho I will grant you that in general being shot hurts less than being stabbed
I have never been shot, but I have been stabbed and I can say it wasn't all that bad. (don't get me wrong it sucked after the adrenaline wore off, but during that time I was okay enough to get to a pay phone and call an ambulance.) Just like with real estate the key is Location Location Location. I'll take a stab would on my side again over a gsw to the thigh any day. but I'd take a gsw to the arm over a gut wound from a sword any day.
the first time I got shot was through the meat of my thigh during a firefight in 2003... I just thought I had a leg cramp and didn't even realize it was a GSW till after the fight was over... to be fair tho I had been running around in full battle rattle so my legs were burning already... but regardless most gunshot wounds don't really hurt... especially with the over rated varmint rounds most modern ARs use because they tend to make very small wound channels and only smallish tears in the skin... not really that bad till sepsis sets in... now the only real bad exceptions I've ever seen are stomach wounds... dying of a stomach shot is so painful if there isn't a field hospital close you're better off just shooting them in the head to end it otherwise it's a very slow agonizing death

but for this argument I am more comparing being sliced or run through with a sword/axe/spear to being shot with an AR... in which care the AR is the much less painful way to go
Do they allow mercy kills? I thought that was... reprimandable.
