Read the sentence above over agian.
Because it is so poorly worded that if you think you made any semblance of sense with it the first time around you'd be wrong.

I am going to default to the question posed in the threads title as the actual question posed because it makes the most sense.

And I am going to answer in metaphor.

This question plays out like this: If chocolate cake is so delicious than should other deserts exist?

In that frame of obviousness the question is answered. But for the folks who did not get it: If there is a dollar to be made on another MMO then there is justification enough for it to be produced, no matter what anyone else says about WoW.

Hell no. Only you can decide what you like, others can give opinions, but ultimately it is you who makes the decision. If you don't like WoW, don't play it, find something else.

Everyone talks about how great Cheerios are.
Everyone uses it as the standard in cereal.
Everyone says that people should be eating Cheerios if they are going to eat breakfast at all.
Everyone says that people should be able to cough up the comparitively meager price of the boxes if they are gonna spend all their time on breakfast.
Everyone says this, everyone says that.
I am not asking if Cheerios really are as great as people say. Nor am I asking if it is better than other cereals.
I want to know if you think it is really right for people to say that other cereals should not be eaten because Cheerios are "better."
This is what I read.

As for the actual question, I believe everyone has the right to say whatever they want. WoW is a good game. I love it to death. Does that make it the best game? No, of course not. The popular opinion shouldn't sway you.

I think that WOW is a pretty good MMORPG, everyone has their own opinions, IMO WOW is probably one of the best out there right now, but its stupid to think that you should to stop making MMORPG's because of an MMORPG thats doing really good, because its doing so good it lets developers know that there's a cash cow there and they start making more MMORPG's, plus they need the competition because of monopolies and stuff like that, and a true gamer, no matter what the game, plays all games and doesn't try to diss one game over another, the more games the better, WOW is just one that's done really well for itself, if you like it, you play it, if you dont, you dont, but something just makes me think that your post is the result of a bad run-in with a WOW fanboy/girl, give it a chance, it is a really good MMORPG (again in IMO).

Does no one realise that this thread was a commentary on the general public consensus on the topic of MMORPGs? I've never played WoW. I probably never will. I hold my aligances to Fiesta, if forced to side with a player base.
I was attempting to make a point, stating that most of what one (or at least in my own experience) hears about MMORPGs in general, it always seems to be that WoW is the best, and there are some other games, but lets go interview someone from Blizzard. Take Yahzee, known by all Escapees, for example. Whenever he mentions MMOs, its WoW, then everything else lumped into an this-game-is-inferior-to-World-of-Warcraft category.
I know that WoW's "superiority" is relative. That's why I used the, "Everyone says" phrase so frequently in the opening post. Since Escapists often stress the collective stupidity of people, I expected it to be taken more like: "People are collectively stupid. That is wrong because of *insert example of why it is wrong here*. I think *insert witty, unique thought here*"
Particularly without people taking my post so seriously.

It does make me wonderfully happy that yall're being witty, though. That's come to be expected in the Escapist forums, fortunately.

Now, WoW isn't the perfect MMORPG by a long shot, but it does just about everything passably well and you can't deny that it's accessible to the max. And it'd be stupid to say that "no other games of genre X should exist because game Y is so good/popular", since there are plenty of things others can do better. That'll always be the case.
I'm pretty sure you summed-up exactly what I was thinking when I first read this thread, except replace "passably well" with "barely, miniscually, scratching-the-surface-of-the-tip-of-an-iceberg 49.5% D-grade passably well", I agree with you.
But mine's with the distinction that every other MMORPG that does one or two things better than WoW seems to do heaps of other features worse or not at all. Like the ones I listed. I can also add Eve Online, there. It's an awesome social sandbox with one of the best communities out there, but the game itself is some of the slowest paced Excel that I've ever played. And I've played Master of Orion 3.

It's a shame, since the genre does have heaps of unrealized potential. For now, though, even the best MMORPG isn't a terribly good game. I'm glad WoW has made the genre more appealing for casual gamers (by making soloing actually viable, for instance, and not making leveling up a lifetime project), but we need to take quite a few more steps before we're there. Starting by inventing some proper alternatives for the modern tank-healer-dps triangle.
