I myself have played/tried mostly any genre there is at one point. But my gaming heart is somehow a mixture of Bioware/Indie/Nintendo-ish stuff if I had to describe it. I play games since the NES, after the SNES mostly only on PC though.

I have a big problem getting into "proper" shooters (first of all I suck at aiming and second because I mostly don't go for "realistic" settings in comparison to scifi/steampunk/fantasy). I loved all three (yes, all three) Bioshock installments so far and do enjoy other shooter-like games which have gimmicky stuff. I played Crysis back then and that was all well done and nice with the suit but didn't pull me through it completely. I played F.E.A.R. and liked that a lot but in the end couldn't cope with the jump scares

What I ask myself again and again: On which stuff did I miss out when I don't play most major shooters? Far Cry 3 seemed very cool to me because of the sandbox part and the involving story. Is there perhaps even one of the Call of Duty games I should have tried? The atombomb-scene sounded like the series has its moments of intrigue from time to time? Should I go back and play Half Life 2 finally, which I own but never fired up?`

I appreciate your thoughts in advance, fellow escapists.

When you say shooters do you mean shooters in general or just the ones that are in first person (judging from your examples)?

I haven't run across a single person that agrees with me, but I truly love Far Cry: Instincts and the subsequent remakes/sequels.

It's one of those rare experiences where, considering all the games out there that try to scare you, you finally get to play the monster (in a way).

I would say Left 4 Dead 2 with some good buddies and Portal 1 and 2. While L4D2 is somewhat violent, its a hell of a fun experience with friends and a great way to learn how to play coop games or work alongside a team. The portal series is more about puzzles and movement rather than raw twitch shooting. Both games reward actually using your head rather than just trying to brute force fast shoot your way through every problem you run into.

I don't generally play FPS, that said there are some exceptions. Borderlands, Far Cry, and Half Life/Portal/Team Fortress are FPS that I really enjoy

as far as shooters in general go there's a lot of good ones. Too many to list :S

Oh, nice catch. Yeah, Singularity was different enough that I'd recommend it. Should be pretty cheap now too.

Oh, and if we're talking about also TPSes; Vanquish.

Sure, there's not much of a story and the environments/enemies get a bit samey (I say get, they are samey), but as much as a TPS with bullet time and cover mechanics sounds like the worst thing ever, remember that ROCKET SLIDES are a thing.

Just being able to string together rocket slide into shooting into melee hit into shooting suspended in air of your own accord is satisfying, if nothing else.

I'm an old gamer who despises FPS and most TPS.

The only tolerable "shooters" I've played were RPGs basically and a few other exceptions that dip into other genres as well.

Fallout 3 / Fallout: NV (VATS for the win!)
Deus Ex: HR
Tomb Raider
The Last of Us
Spec Ops: The Line (less so, but is a simple enough shooting gallery to get by)
Star Wars: Battlefront (1 and 2)

Mostly I just can't do straight up shooters. I usually need another hook and even then, it's rare.

Here? I was watching Game of Thrones but yes, you are totally right. I don't know why I actually forget all the time that that has been in my steam library for ages.

Deus Ex, yes, totally, actually I forgot to say I played all three of them. Gimmicky-stuff I love, indeed.

Singularity has been mentioned twice, I will check some videos of that.

Stalker is indeed something which could work for me. I can live with punishment, I played both Souls games.

Portal is amazing. Probably one of the best gaming experiences in my life but not really a shooter? Except, for, well, shooting, but not as I meant it. Yes, I should have said:

And can you imagine? I own the second Portal, too, but I only finished the coop modus so far? I am a bad person...

I would say Borderlands or Borderlands 2 in addition to those mentioned here. Far Cry 3 is really good.

As for not playing Half Life 2... play it but once you get to this airboat thing stop playing there and just believe that the airboat is the end of the game. The airboat section goes on forever and is the most painfully boring game experience i've ever had and i've played since text adventures were a thing. (why can't I get ye flask???)

Oh and there is a Portal 2...

My goodness does it ever erk me when people use Indie as a genre. My my, that just encourgages more Artsy Platformers above all else, and we have many platformers as it is.

And even though it is a proper shooter, I really like the Borderlands series. The guns feel powerful and the gunplay is just as much at heart as the Dukes of Hazard-esque comedy.

I recommend them both.

Recently I got System Shock 2, theif gold, and theif 2: the metal age. SS2 plays like bioshock only harder, scarier, and with more RPG elements. The thief games are really fun stealth games; pretty much everything Yahtzee said about them are true. They're all from the late 90s, so they're a little ugly, but VA work is still good and the games are still fun.

i find it funny, that you said you are into "nintendo"-ish games and no one mentioned Metroid Prime... seriously, go out and buy a Wii and a copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy like... NOW. they are actually not shooters, but adventure games played from a first person perspective. sure, you have to shoot stuff, but most of the time you will explore and scan stuff. they are such fantastic games it made my mind blown even after playing it 6-10 years after it's initial releases. there is nothing like Metroid Prime on the market like... ever. technically it looks bad by today's standard, but it's not uglier, than HL2 and it's art style makes up for it's technical limitations. i could go on forever about how awesome these games are, but seriously... just play it.
