American here. I'll try and pick something a little more topical to A: avoid the obvious choices like the Red Scare, and B: saying "I'll pick something recent" makes making a choice much easier..
Can stopping something count? 9/11, and as a result, all the things America did as a result of it. I imagine the 00's would have been a much more productive decade if it wasn't for that.

Somehow get over-populated countries to immigrate to Canada. Because there's just so much damn space up here! And I can't stand seeing such small countries get far too many people to handle...

If I could change one thing in American history it would be that all people regardless of race, gender, or class were treated equally and fairly from the very beginning. Think about all that that would change.
Of course I know that, what I'm saying is that when Hitler broke his alliance with Stalin and invaded Russia we shouldn't have done anything to help them. It's not like the Soviets had any choice about fighting the Nazis and as long as they were stuck in the Eastern Front the Nazis weren't in a position to attack the UK directly. If we'd driven up the casulties then we'd have been in a better position to remove the Soviets from power after the war.Da Orky Man said:

The expansion into the "new world" came too soon for western culture, it and the imperialism that followed set cultural progress back by at least a century.
Have the Puritans killed before they can leave for Plymouth Rock and establish that awful country on the other side of the atlantic we know today as America. So many lives would be saved from ruination in the process. :3
