I think if people paid attention to the games they're playing instead of parroting every critic on the interweb, they'd see that games aren't nearly as grey and brown as they like to think and we wouldn't need to have this asinine debate.

But I'll say we should have crazy aliens with purple spaceships and weaspons that shoot hot blue plasma. OH WAIT, THEN PEOPLE WILL JUST MOAN ABOUT HOW THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.

I don't need to because planetside 2 is coming out next year.

Yes, let's get rid of the brown and grey with... brown and grey.
BRILLIANT.

OT: I dunno. Add more greens, more blues, I guess.
You're right. A game where one empire's armor is bright red, another blue and yellow, and the third is teal / purple, with multiple biomes (marsh, winter, desert, etc) is totally brown and grey. The picture above doesn't even have any brown; it's a red environment.

So much facepalm!
To me that looks more brown with a hint of orange.
And you could have chosen a better picture to represent all these bright colours really, because as someone whose never seen another screenshot from Planetside 2 it's not really a great representation of "new colourful game".
It's red! http://www.destination360.com/north-america/us/arizona/images/red-rocks.jpg

I chose a great screenshot. You can see red jets, blue and yellow jets, and blue and yellow tanks, in a RED ROCK environment.

I like color as much as the next guy, but there's no reason to eye rape the players with neons.
Sorry man, I'm just not seeing it. I can see the red planes, sure, I see the blue, once I enlarge and zoom in on it, but I'm struggling to see the yellow. And it still looks like browny-orange to me.
You know what? Regardless of whether or not it's brown or red, it's a desert, an environment that is inherently dull from a visual standpoint. Seeing rock textures repeated across an entire map does not do anything for the game's image to me.

Anyways, I've tried to find a screenshot of the other biomes and failed, so I can't post a better picture like I wanted. Maybe one of you can.

I'm inclined to agree here. Modern Warfare 2, part of the franchise that gets the most shit in this regard, had a total of THREE levels set in the Middle East, the typical breeding ground of brown and grey environments, and yet all of them sported a varied color palette. Then we have the Brazil Level, the snowy mountain ranges, the American suburb with skies red from fire, the grassy field, etc.
But I'll say we should have crazy aliens with purple spaceships and weaspons that shoot hot blue plasma. OH WAIT, THEN PEOPLE WILL JUST MOAN ABOUT HOW THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.
If this is a purposeful reference to Halo, then I must ask, what do you mean by that last sentence? I didn't think many people thought that the games didn't make sense.

As much as most people will hate me for saying so, if you want colour in games, play a JRPG. Allow me to list a few modern ones: Tales of Vesperia, Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy 13 (say what you like, at least it isn't monochrome), Valkyria Chronicles, The World Ends With You, Kingdom Hearts (all of them)...

I know everyone on this site hates JRPGs, and about two-thirds of them only hate them because Yahtzee Croshaw their God does, but to then complain about no games at all having colour is just...There are no words.

Edit: Or you could get a Wii and buy Okami, MadWorld, and all of Nintendo EAD's games (except Twilight Princess; I'll admit that was all weak colours everywhere.) Also, there are games that pull off the brown-and-grey look pretty well, like the Fallout games.

Well since pink and white is taken, i'ma go with black and and white! I'd like to see a little more artistic games , something like the movies , Sin city , schinlers list and sucker punch . Sucker punch wasn't black and white , but it was very dark, and i think that movie would make an AMAZING horror game if done properly.
Heard of MadWorld?

It is a deliberate reference to Halo, and yes, people complain about brightly coloured aliens and spaceships not making sense - even going so far as to saying blue and orange coloured aliens would make poor soldiers due to lack of camoflague. Seriously.

Trade one evil for another... ya that's very helpful.

I guess it's just repeating trends, we started out with one or two colors then the big sales pitch was a huge color pallet, then we went into color blending and now we're going back to less color, I bet my bottom if we wait another 5 years they will start bringing color back and call it innovation.

And the truly hilarious thing is the majority will agree just as they now think going brown is the shit.

Apparently, billions of years ago, the earliest plant or plantlike organisms were purple.

I'd love to see space marines wearing purple camouflage paint, and staring moodily across purple jungles with 60s esque war songs playing.

Well, considering the fact that those aliens have predator like invisibility, I don't think camouflage is an issue. I've never heard that complaint before.

It's already been made. EDIT: Or was this what you were referencing?

That is, indeed, what I was referencing.
