I would pick... my ex-girlfriend because her pitch voice pierces my ears and she causes grief to my current girlfriend and myself. This is just my personal choice, and probably there are better choices, but still

Goddamnit, bricks were shat.

Personally? I'd have to think of whoever was able to stand in the way of me gaining the ability to run some sort of fascist regime, once he'd been dealt with, I could 'delete' anyone I wanted.

No point getting a taste for it and then being left to dry.

No one. Sure, they're are people out there that really suck, but I don't harbor any hate for them. Hell, even the worse person in the entire world (yes, I mean that literally) Mathew Thornhill wouldn't get deleted as, without him, I would not be where I am, and all the good I have done and the lessons learned would have never happened (hell, maybe even the person who I, with some help, convinced not to kill himself would be dead right now), meaning I would be a much worse person than I am.

Heh, nice.

Eh, I know it will encite a flamewar, but, Jesus, or whoever was responsible for the idea of him. A thousand or so years of dark ages, erased? I'd like to see how that would have turned out.
But do you honestly think it would change anything? Suddenly you have an inquisition storming your house because you aren't worshiping Zeus. The Dark Ages were because of the collapse of Rome and the loss of it's knowledge, and Rome collapsed for reasons much deeper than simply Christianity popping up.

Erase a single person from history?
Cain
He was the first man to slay another of his own kind. All violent thought stems from his sin.

Non-religious people however are a different thing. There's so many bad people that did so many bad things. However, instead of removing one of them and thus maybe creating another, worse one; I would choose to delete myself. I can't deal with half of the shit in the world anyways.

I can't decide between Rihanna, Taylor Swift, or that woman from Sugarland. Are you sure I can't have three deletes? My ears and brain cells could really use the break from their awful voices and stupid lyrics.

Hitler I guess.
He is probably one of the most evil human beings to ever live, so I guess getting rid of him would be a good thing.
Einstein already tried that... Not a great idea. First comes Stalin trying to take over Europe, and then later the USA gets invaded by bomb dropping blimps among other things. And then after that, the tables get turned on Einstein as he gets deleted himself and then not only do have have the previously mentioned bomb dropping blimps to deal with, the Japanese show up with a insane psychic schoolgirl.

As evil as he was, probably best to leave Hitler alone.

As in completely erase this persons mark on the world as if he/she'd never been born. Who would you choose?

I'd choose the person that created "Rule 34"

So many childhood memories de-sanctified...
It existed before someone made it a "rule" that was why it was made a rule, it just lacked a name before. Sorry you would still be drowning in Disney porn.

I would be much more selfish with my deletion. A specific person that took something special from me, that probably would have had a profound effect on how my life turned out.

Yes, it's all about me, but isn't that the point of the deletion anything else would be to massive to stop it completely by simply removing one person from the picture. It's like trying to say that removing Leslie Richard Groves from the picture would have prevented the development of nuclear weapons because he headed the Manhattan project. Even if the US failed to develop the weapons the Germans or the British would have. The British had a long head start on the US when the project started as did the Germans. It was the vast resources the US could muster that ended up with the US pulling ahead in the race. Not one specific person, or even a couple of people. The project employed over 130,000 people at it's peek.

It would be very interesting to say Hitler, thereby proving Godwin's Law, but I feel that the legacy of World War II is a mixed bag, as horrible as the Holocaust was. Instead, I am going to go with someone involved with WWII who is often overlooked as someone to "erase" in these kinds of questions.

Josef Stalin

When Lenin died, it was quite a close call between Stalin and Trotsky over who would be his successor. The Soviet Union was not a totalitarian regime at the time. Stalin took it in that direction, and it is not inevitable that Trotsky would have done the same. Yes, under Stalin's regime the Soviet Union experienced a great amount of economic growth, but at a tremendous cost that ended up being larger than the amount that died under Nazi rule in Germany. While Stalin's gulags were more for political than ethnic prisoners, it was pretty much for anyone whom he had any sort of slight problem with. Further, it was the Stalinist Soviet Union that really started the whole "Red Scare" in the U.S. that led to the Cold War and the branding of Communism as inevitably leading to such totalitarian regimes. The Cold War itself was really a shameful period in the foreign policies of both the U.S. and Russia/U.S.S.R., that I am sure both would take back in a heartbeat. Under Stalin, the Soviets did win WWII, but then placed the entirety of Eastern Europe under their harsh sphere of influence, dragging the region's growth to a stunted pace as compared to that of Western Europe and North America. Really, anything Stalin touched turned to crud. And I feel the Soviets and the Allies could have still won the war under Trotsky, even if they avoided going totalitarian. History would have looked a lot different. Whether that would be for the better or worse is unknown, but it would be hard to be worse than what Stalin did to the U.S.S.R. So that's who I would "erase" from history.
A very sane and logical choice. I too would have a hard time "erasing" Hitler because I think we'd be lucky to be having this conversation without him (Technology grew by leaps and bounds from WWII).

While on the topic of erasing progress, I wonder what would happen if Bill Gates got erased? I wonder if we'd have broken the 1GHZ barrier yet in personal computing.

As for my legitimate choices, I'm just going to throw some names out there: Fred Phelps, Jack Thompson, Bobby Kotick, John Steinbeck (I fucking hate his books I had to read in highschool) The Pope (Blessing cars doesn't make you a good religious leader, it makes you a politician), L. Ron Hubbard, Thomas Eddison (Tesla was way cooler), Whoever made the shows Desperate Housewives or Sex in the City, The Fox exec who canned Futurama and Firefly (and to some extent Family Guy, but they're dead to me now too) My state's governor, George W. Bush, Al Gore, and lets throw Michael Moore in there just for fun.

Madeline Murray O'hare. Because seriously, fuck her and her ugly mug and her special brand of hatemongering. Ditto for Fred Phelps.

Honorable mention goes to:
Christopher Paolini
The fellow who came up with the ending to ME 2
Susan Smith
The bloke who coined the term "furry" in its modern incarnation
BANANNA PHONE
That retarded old fart who sits on my doorstep and tells me to cheer up all the time (cookie for the reference)
That guy who I caught feeling up my horse
Everyone who had anything to do with The Tangerine Bear
Carlos Mencia
And whoever cancelled Pushing Daisies.

I would say Justin Bieber, but really, I'm afraid of the consequences. Starting with the enormous lavish tributes and ceremonies in his honor, then the next wave of Justin Bieber wannabees will flood in to fill the gap in the market and...well...I'm terrified.

I dunno. Maybe Barack Obama. Not because I hate him or anything, just to watch the Secret Service, and then the rest of the U.S completely flip out as to what the **** just happened to the 'most powerful and delete-proof man on the planet'.

EDIT: Yeah, I get it now. In that case, probably Stephenie Meyer. I want this whole 'spunky vampire' thing to just go away :'(

Also, I think, considering the computing terminology, that perhaps 'Undo' would be a better term than 'Delete'...Just saying ;)

I would delete whoever granted me the power the delete things. Such power should not exist! Though wait, if the person who granted me this power was deleted, I never would have gotten the power to begin with, and thus he never would have been deleted...ah shit. I suck at this game.
