If you could go back and improve/ruin one game...

After seeing the "delete one game from existence" thread, I got this idea:

You have the ability to change one game. Any changes will move forward (ruin the game, the sequels will feel the fallout; improve the game, and maybe they will make sequels of potentially dubious quality). This also assumes that, somehow, your changes will get the game the recognition it deserves as well.

For me, it would be to go back and change FFXI to be similar to the improved version now. Partly because I love the game. But mostly because I'd love to see the ripple effect on the MMO market if the changes it uses now were instituted then.

I mean, I don't know about how the sequels might play out as a result, but I'd improve Bioshock. You know:

- Take out the pipe minigame, replace it with the Bioshock 2 method.

- Change the little sisters. Or at least, set up a different spectrum than good/evil. Maybe little sisters could be competent fighters in support roles, and instead of harvest/kill, it could be ally/drain. The Drain option gives you a lot of ADAM, but you have to work alone. The ally option gives you less ADAM but the little sisters that you ally with travel through the vent system, and can be called upon to kill opponents, a la Assassins Creed Brotherhood. But with a catch: you have to recall them when they're tired and maybe even heal them with medpacks, or enemies can kill them. Have the ending relate back to this, but with an overuse of the Drain option meaning Jack embraces Objectivism and the Ally option meaning that he rejects it. You know, Objectivism/Cooperation instead of Good/Evil. Have both endings morally ambiguous to reflect and emphasize that distinction.

-Take away wallet restrictions. Or at least raise the ceiling. Although, it was ironic that in a game about a city ruled by laissez-faire capitalism, there was a cap to the amount of wealth you could have.

-Change the final boss fight. The WYK incident (You know what I'm talking about) was undoubtedly the climax of the game. Have the last section of the game (after gaining freedom) consist of trapping Fontaine in an enclosed area, and going in to take him down. Then, as we know that the hit-him-three-times boss fight doesn't work, have it be more cinematic than combat based. You know, tracking him through a labyrinthine section of the city, getting an occasional glimpse, then finally getting to kill the son of a *****.

Alpha Protocol

SOOOOOO much potential that was squandered on a buggy-ass game and slightly unbalanced boss fights (kind of like Deus Ex: HR when you sink skills into kung fu and you run into a gun fight).

So...Alpha Protocol if it had like...a year extra in development

Xenogears, where the second disc actually has full gameplay, so I can actually play the story instead of watching it on a slideshow.

^This so much!^

And also I'd go back to make the Deus Ex: HR straight to the director's cut. A free DLC to those already owning the game would have been a fan favor, but giving it a price. That is just unforgivable.

I would go back and help Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. While it was always a fun experience for me to play it. I feel if it had done better at release maybe we could have gotten more out of the series. Maybe the Werewolf game wouldn't have cancelled. So many interesting games in the World of Darkness that could be turned into amazing RPG's

To improve a game...
I'd say every FPS to have an auto-mute function in multiplayer lobbies. But that's more of a systematic change.
In that case, take Claptrap out of Borderlands once and for all. I hated that little turd of a robot with an unholy passion.

To ruin a game...
I'd say replace all guns in the next COD game with The Klobb. (Goldeneye fans will know what I'm talking about.)
Then just wait for the screams and the uproar from COD fans. :D

Improve: Every RPG with the Deus Ex style multiple routes that then has boss fights that are more in the style of a different genre -- Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Deus Ex: Human Revolution being the obvious candidates (though I don't really mind so much in Human Revolution, for one thing you get enough points for basically all the skills, for two regenerating health makes the non-boss fights a bit anti-climatic).

I would have personal input on every Armored Core game to date, especially the most recent, and implement changes including having every part have a different model, retaining stat complexity, rebalancing, removal of the ineffective damage system, NPC interaction and dialogue leagues better than anything it has currently, adjusting map combat zone limits, adjusting tanks, bringing back hover legs, and much, much more. I love Armored Core, but considering the low opinion I have of myself, if I think I can vastly improve a game, it's doing something wrong.

Take my internet cookie!
But yeah I agree with you on that one, I played Alpha Protocol and I saw a lot of potential. Not many spy games around these days and that one almost brought it back.

Except the main character wasn't that great, it was buggy and if you dump everything into fist-fighting you would not need to use anything else for the majority of the game.

Only if it had another year. *Wipes tear*

Now for me OP.

To a improve a game.

Bioshock Infinite: Horror (own opinion).

FPS genre.
- Lets go back to the world wars (or even before that) before we get into future FPS with lasers. Or at least try to make it fun again.
- An age checker. If you are below a certain age you get banned from playing. (Don't know how they would do it though)
- No swearing lobbies.

Fire Emblem: Awakening
- A sequel.

Mass Effect 3.
- Well all know what.

Bioshock.
- Have a Bid Daddy called JoJo who eventually makes a group full of evil people.

To ruin.

The Last of Us.
- Replace Ellie with a troll COD player called Elliot.
- Change the ending to something like Mass Effect 3.
- Set it in ... uh ... the future?

Diablo III: so it's more like diablo II with updated graphics, new classes and some fresh acts/areas, but stays the same in terms of mechanics

Sacred II: a diablo-clone with very interesting classes/skill system. everything else was pretty fucked up and im not sure how i would fix it.

Dark souls: the 2nd part of the game, after you reached anor londo, was pretty mediocre and at some points you can see how rushed it was. it needs some balance changes when it comes to weapons, attributes and backstabs; the covenants are pretty half-assed aswell. some are really good while others barely offer any benefit or just dont really work (gravelord, dragon covenant).

Gothic 3: what a disappointing mess. gothic 1 and 2 definitely deserve a better sequel than that.

Bioshock infinite: not sure about that, tbh. had a blast playing through it but i really disliked the ending.

Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2

Don't get me wrong, I love the games and will continue playing them for years to come,
But ME3 needs a new ending and Dragon Age 2 needs some new environments

This is a great question. I'd go back and ruin CoD 4 MW because I liked the way the Battlefield series was going before they decided they had to copy CoD.
Or maybe I can just take away perks and attachments from BF3, keep commander in it and have 6 person squads with spawning only on the leader and voice coms within your squad and between the squad leaders and commanders. That should accomplish the same thing without breaking another series. No fucking death cams either.
While we're at it, let's just go into Halo 2 multiplayer and switch out matchmaking for dedicated servers. This was the first place I saw matchmaking done in a popular game so why not nip that problem in the bud.

You could ruin Bayonetta by replacing the dodge with a block (yes I know you can unlock a block later hush.) Seriously, the dodge is the main gameplay mechanic that keeps the game going and never stops being fun.

Until you get to the harder difficulties and the enemies get really stingy with handing out Witch Time. Fuck you Grace & Glory, nobody likes you.

You could improve Devil Survivor Overclocked with adding proper attack animations but it's forgivable considering how old the base game is.

You could ruin Fire Emblem Awakening by removing the partner system. Seriously any A/S level partnership is a force of nature. I'm so sticking my player character with Chrom all game in my second run, it would make their relationship better than it already is at base.

It's nice to see characters go from being total babies (Chrom i'm looking at you) into total 1v10 badasses (Chrom i'm looking up to you now, how did I ever doubt you?)

I really do like the dual protagonist thing they have, it was quite unexpected.

I'd improve Metro 2033 by simply adding a few female guards and possibly at least one interactable female soldier to make the environment more realistic and to add variety.

I would love to see hwo the MMO market is if WoW started off with an action combat system instead of the system they got now...

Good shout, Ive personally really liked it so far but i can see where it would need some buffing up.

For me i have to surgest Dragon's Dogma, man this is a good game but it has its issues. The pawn AI needs some fixing, it needs an option to skip the intro for when you decide to start a new character. More varied environments/monsters. Fix UI, better towns and a good fast traveling system.
