DmC: Devil May Cry
Now, I really liked this game and I honestly think it's a pretty solid hack-n-slash game.
The core of Devil May Cry is there, but it needs to refine the 3 elements that previous titles like DMC 3 & 4 made it great in the first place:
- Unique style classes: Being able to choose between Swordmaster, Trickster, Royal Guard, Gunslinger, Darkslayer (DMC 3 for Vergil. DMC 4 for Dante), Doppelganger and Quicksilver (DMC 3) AND have unique movesets, abilities, advantages and disadvantages based on each fighting style you chose creates a sheer level of technical depth that was sorely lacking in the latest title.
- The need to constantly adapt your tactics: With the exception of bosses, enemies seemed hesitant to attack you and this left the enemy encounters feeling like a training mode to display your moveset...NOT an environment where you're facing a constant onslaught of attacks and every single move had serious ramifications for you, your style meter and score at the end of the level.
- Difficulty: Now don't get me wrong, the new DmC does show it's teeth eventually...but only on Dante Must Die and Hell or Hell. Which by that point isn't all that challenging when you're fully upgraded. In previous titles like DMC 3 & 4, you NEEDED access to your entire moveset if you want to stand a chance at surviving, it's perfectly doable, but when you achieve an "S" ranking at the end of the level or hit "Stylish!" in the Style meter...you felt like you earned it! In the new title, you're practically thrown with a single "S" rank when according to DMC 3 standards, you'd earn a "C" at best.
By no means am I bashing the game, I just feel that the core gameplay has taken a quite a few steps back from the vastly improved gameplay system that was established in previous titles.
