If you could go back in time and remake Avatar, what would you do differently?

I agree with most of these points, weaver was horribly miscast in this film and i would like to see that rectified.

I especially like the idea of adding in the Na'vi using older base weaponry, as that would eliminate the GLARING continuity error: How is it the arrows can now blast through windows like a rock through fragile glass when before they just bounced off of the ships?

I would follow the original script. Before it got turned into the rubbish it was released as. You where both sides had reasonable characters, where going native wasnt this unthought of idea, where all the characters had reasonable personalities and acted like human beings rather than people trying to simply trope. Oh and have people react reasonable to situations.
Hmm, thats also a good point that i would rather enjoy seeing changed..making the characters become more like actual people then just base archtypes.

I'd actually make it good. SHA-BOOSH!

Real answer:
More action sequences. The action sequences were one of the best parts of the film, but there was sadly less of that, and more of the two unlikeable dildos trying to make character development that just wasn't interesting.

No Sigourney Weaver or Michelle Rodriguez. Weaver is a great actress and all (Nuke the site from orbit! It's the only way to be sure.), but she was very mis-cast in this film. I felt like she was only there because she was also in Aliens, another Cameron film. Same goes for Michelle Rodriguez, except unlike Weaver, she's not a good actress, and her character was pretty much useless. So I'd re-cast Weaver's character, and get rid of Rodriguez's character.

Add elements that differentiate itself from it's borrowed elements. I mean, I don't mind a film that borrows heavily from something that was successful, only if they manage to present it in new and interesting ways. They half got it right, since they made some jaw-dropping special effects, but the writing was just plain bad. Not awful, but not Oscar-worthy (Which is odd seeing it was nominated for an Oscar). It just SCREAMED Dances With Wolves and Pochahontas without feeling like it was a different film. What I'd do is that, I'd change some small elements that made a big difference, like the whole "nature" thing. I mean, they were almost the exact same thing as Native americans that it wasn't funny, and felt rather pathetic in how no thought was put into their beliefs. Why not just give them the same intentions as the prawns in District 9. They're simply misunderstood, yet unique. So it would just be about the humans fucking up the alien planet for the mineral, and they'd be destroying forests and shit, only this time, the aliens won't exactly act incredibly annoying and preachy, and won't be complete Native American rip-offs.

Make it more subtle. The movie is about as subtle as a train-wreck on top of an airport. I can see that the film was trying to make a point, which I can totally get, but it all felt soo preachy. For starters: The mineral. Unobtainium is really the best thing Cameron could come up with? The apparent "symbolism" is so. Fucking. Obvious. A five year-old can get it. Literally, my five-year old cousin was able to get it. Then there's the preachy "save the rainforests" garbage. I'd keep the message there, I guess, but tone down the preachiness by a landslide to make it tolerable.

And finally, get rid of the Ewokism. The fact that the humans with helicopters and shit were defeated by a bunch of blue tribal people with spears and arrows really required a suspension of logic. How about having a scene where the Jake, Neytiri, and the Na'Vi would steal a bunch of stuff from the enemies from an old abandoned base that contained old out-dated guns and mech-suits. That way, the Na'vi would still have a fighting chance, and it'd be more realistic.

tl;dr - I'd change a lot of shit that didn't work. The. End.
More-or-less what this guy said.

I really hated Avatar, but reflecting on it I think I didn't hate it because it was bad, per se, but because it was mediocre and could easily have been a lot better.

I'd have at least a few scenes on Earth at the beginning - to mainly serve as a juxtaposition to the lushness of Pandora and cement why Jake basically goes nuts at seeing real nature for the first time.

I'd get rid of the bullshit "chosen one" aspect of the story. I really, really hate this narrative convention. It just screams lazy writing to me. Jake would become accepted into the tribe, but over a longer time and more organically.

Bit more gruesomeness to the battle scenes. I realize this is possibly more of a personal pet-peeve, but I can't stand bowdlerized, "PG-13" violence in Hollywood movies. Getting impaled, crushed, shot, thrown out of aircraft are all horrible ways to die, and I think this deserves a little more reflection. If I had kids, I'd honestly rather they watch movies filled with healthy human sexuality rather than movies that make war and slaughter look like clean, wholesome fun.

And speaking of sex, more of that too. The Na'vi are basically like cat people right? So sex scenes with lots of hissing and neck-biting. :-D

Deathworld?
A 1950's sci-fi book by Harry Harrison about a telekinetic gambler who travels to a planet where all native life has evolved over the last 300 years with the specific purpose of killing humans.

Congratulations, you've just made another run of the mill action movie.

But why all the hate for Avatar people, myself and pretty much everyone I have spoken too about it agree that it was an amazing film deserving of the praise it received.

I wouldn't say i hated it, the movie itself was alright, but i felt that it could have been far more then it was.

I think it would've made more sense if the aliens (I can't remember what their called for certain...Na'vi wasn't it?) have a better defense and offense. I mean, they seemed incredibly weak against the overwhelming fire superiority of the humans. Also, I understand the whole "network" and "Eywa" bit but the animals joining in the fight seemed like a cheap trick added to explain how they could possibly fight back. Without that, they would have been evicted or eradicated.
