If you could live in any other time period and culture in history, what would it be?

I'd be happy with Victorian Era England or World War II Russia or Finland. Oh and this current timezone of course, very happy right now.
WWII era Russia?
You've got to be kidding me, that's probably one of the worst time periods to live in.

I'd like to re-live to ninties again so I could make insane amounts of money in future tech.

No really, I wouldn't want to live with all the things we have today. Fuck the middle ages.
Screw tech just buy yourself a Grey's Sports Almanac and boom.
True, why bother with a complex plan when that would do. Now, who's hiding the time machine?

I'd like to live in Feudal Japan. I'd get to carry a katana without even so much as a second glance from people, fight ninja's, drift around with no real goal in mind and just enjoy the scenery. Whats not to like about that?
I thought ninjas were the silent assassin types like 47, not the fight in broad daylight types.
They are, but sometimes samurai's have to fight them. Although most of the time they don't see them coming.

The 1980's for the movies and the video games. I seriously would not want to go before 1950 because of one thing: indoor toilets. (My great-grandma didn't get one until the mid-1960's.)

Bah! "Might makes right" worked just fine for thousands of years, didn't it? Plus, Hammurabi's Code and Justinian's Law were very enlightened periods of human rights
Woot Hammurabi's Code FTW!!!
But seriously I'd have to say Medieval Europe Most likely Scotland.

Ehhh...I'd choose to remain here and now, thanks. Being a woman and all that, y'know.

But if I was a MAN, then...Ancient Athens! Debating existence with the best of them! :D

1950s rock and roll or 40s wartime era.

There something charming about the style of those eras that appeals to me so much.

Send me back to the mid-60's to early 70's. The music was good and the f***ing was better.

This topic is full of madness!
(hint hint)
Madness? you'll be going to SPARTA then.

OT: I'm going to go with the eighties. Same basic civilisation and amenities, less red tape. Also, bigger hair and no Lady Gaga.
there's a quote from a certain movie ringing in my head - something about "A Flock of Seagulls and that's about it". Add in a bunch of greedy corporate b@stards raping the economy for quick bucks, and I can attest to the truth of that.

I honestly would go with (drum roll please)... the fifties. Yes, major problems on a lot of cultural fronts, but to me, that's when America was just realizing what it was like to be all grown up and in charge'n stuff, and it was an exciting "we can do things!" time. I often wonder what life would be like without having had the 60's and 70's messing up entire generations.

Plus, it's mandatory to wear a sweet hat in public. Score.

Honestly? Present day. Sure, we've got problems. Sure, our culture is in the toilet. But it wasn't any better back then. Every period has its fair share of problems and I'm convinced that present day society has the least amount of problems.

1950's? Massive Racism and the threat of nuclear war between the USA and USSR.
1910's? Again, Massive Racism, sexism, poor medical technology, spotty law enforcement, and huge levels of corruption. Not to mention that jingoist nationalism was ALL the rage.
1920's? Same problems as 1910's, only slightly better.
1940's? Nazis and Japanese Fascists.
1950's - 1990's? USSR and Hard-line Communist China made billions of people unhappy. Now, the USSR no longer exists and China has pretty much gone full-blown capitalism mode (albeit with a severely authoritarian government - it IS possible to have a Free MARKET but not necessarily a free SOCIETY).
1800's? Plague, Polio, Napoleonic wars, and extremely primitive 'medicine'. HORRENDOUS working conditions.
1700's? Even more diseases, pirates, kings ruled much of the world and democracy pretty much didn't really exist, except in name only.
1600's and before? Starvation was a real possibility for just about anyone. And the average lifespan? Less than 40 years old.

THE PAST S.U.C.K.E.D. There is no other way to put it. Sure, the present has a heck of a lot of problems, but it is orders or magnitude better than the past. The past was pure misery in many cases.

No, I couldn't stand to live in any other society than the present day. And that goes for almost any nation in any time period as well - almost every single country on earth was worse off 100-1000 years ago than today. You think third-world poverty is a recent thing? Third-world nations weren't rolling around in riches before, just so ya know. Nor were they perfectly peaceful either! As much as I detest racism and realize the horrors committed against indigenous people, the White Man didn't ruin EVERYTHING, nor is he the source of all ills. Every single nation was worse off in the past than in the present, with the sole exception of Somalia, which had a working government in the past, but lacks one right now.

You think Russia is bad now? Worse under the Tsar. You think the UK is bad now? Imagine what life would have been like as a feudal serf or peasant under a King/Queen with real power. You think the US is bad now? Just try to imagine how much worse it was when it was busy driving off and killing Native Americans pretty much wholesale. You think things are bad now? At least we didn't have to contend with Polio, or State-Sanctioned Slavery (which happened in Rome, Ancient China, and many other nations, including the Confederate states of America).

The sad, crushing truth is, things have never been better for humanity. Think about how sad that statement really is. With all the problems, genocides, wars, diseases that we have now, it's still better than any other point in our history.

And another thing: Forensic technology. In the past, you could be hanged by the State simply because some rich socialite says you committed a crime, and the police would trust them and take their word over it. In the past, if the police wanted to put you in jail, it was ludicrously easy to do so - because there were no court-appointed lawyers (who did their job properly at any rate), there WAS no DNA evidence or security cameras. You could get away with murder, and you could be accused of murder based on hearsay. Justice in the past SUCKED. Read some of the "trials" and "courts" that existed back 500, 600 years ago - they were a JOKE. As bas as our present day justice system is, we don't put people's hands in fire to test if they stole something!!

I'm going for something else than the eternal Romans/Greeks/China you get in threads like this.

So I'm going for early/mid medieval Arabia, also known as the Islamic Golden Age, the center of science, art and philosophy in those days. Plus it gives me a Dune-like vibe, and I dig that.
That's a good choice. In the 900s AD Baghdad was the most advanced city in the world. During this period the Arabs and Byzantines preserved Greek and Roman technology, literature, and art while the rest of the Mediterranean and Europe were busy murdering each other and tending their turnips
Not to mention that they were reaching levels of enlightment not seen in Europe until 2 centuries later, on some subjects even more so.

And then compare that to what the Arab world is today...what a rotten shame. I blame those European fucknuts who had to insist on their freakin' cruscades. And Genghis Khan. Like, a lot.
Thanks for being racist towards three of my origins, jerk.

Late 14th to 15t century Rome, Italy. I'd love to be like Ezio Auditore Da Firenze. :D

Well considering the fact that the U.S. is not a Democracy (it's a Republic), and that the original Democratic governments failed (which we almost have, but not completely. There's still hope for when Obama is out) I'd say we're doing pretty good.

Renaissance Italy. To be around some of the greatest innovators in the history of painting and sculpture, and of course meet Leonardo da Vinci. I can't think of a single person in history I would want to have a conversation with more.

Because cultures are totally the same as races, right? Don't call me names thank you very much, especially when they make no sense.

Fact is, the Islamic world today doesn't have the position it had in global society during the Islamic Golden Age. That has fuck-all to do with racism. Neither does Genghis Khan, who doesn't even embody a race, or European, since plenty of races live in Europe and joined the Crusades. So what the hell are you going on about?
