If you could start a band, who'd be in it?

Same as subject, so pretty simple. For me, I would have Anthony Green of Circa Survive on vocals, Asher W. of Piglet on Guitar, Andrew Forsman of The Fall of Troy on Drums, Arif Mirabdolbaghi of Protest the Hero on Bass and myself on Guitar/vocals (I had some more outside choices, like Tim & Chris Collis of This Town Needs Guns on Guitar & Drums respectively or Toby Hayes of Meet Me In St. Louis on Vocals but these were the first I thought of, so yeah). Try too keep it to 1 member from per group and limit the number of members to 7.

Other than the members of my own band who are fine musicians and great people, my "dream band" might look something like this:

Vocals: Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Tony Mills (TNT)
Guitar: Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, Black Label, Steel Dragon)
Guitar: Gus G. (Ozzy, Firewind, Dream Evil)
Bass: Rachel Bolan (Skid Row)
Drums: Bobby Jarzombek (Halford, Riot, Fates Warning, Sebastian Bach)

I'd probably slot in somewhere as a backing vocalist and rhythm guitarist.

Ha, Zakk & Gus. That's so funny and awesome.

That really depends on what kind of genre the group is. And if we are allowed to have dead people. I thought of this assuming they had to be alive and with a Progressive Death Metal group in mind:

Rhythm Guitar and Vocals - Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth, Bloobath)
Lead Guitar - John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Bass Guitar - Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse)
Keyboards - Ihsahn (Emperor, Ihsahn)
Drums - Joey Jordison (Slipknot)

They can be alive or dead. Definite props on Ihsahn.

The 11th Doctor, Batman, Gadalf the White, Kratos, and Commander Sheppard.

We wouldn't actually be able to play anything, but we would still be the best band ever made.

Ah okay, to be honset for this genre of group the only real difference I'd have is bringing in Chuck Schuldiner (Death) rather than Petrucci on Lead Guitar, but I think it kind of works either way. And yes Ihsahn is awesomesauce :D.

Personally, lose Myles and that would be very awesome. Not a fan of his vocals. I'd go with Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) or Rich Balling (RX Bandits, The Sound of Animals Fighting) on vocals, personally.

Hang on, I DID start a band recently, and I selected the people to be in it, and it turned out great. The exercise is even more awesome when it's for real, folks.

If I had to start one now I wouldn't pick anybody famous. Their technical expertise is often offset by the fact that they're a pain in the ass to work with. (Every wonder why your favourite bands keep changing line-up all the time?) I'd pick a bunch of total unknowns who were friendly, nice people, easy to get along with and had little to no live experience and didn't expect much, that way I can mold them into what I wanted them to be, rather than have to deal with a bunch of preconceived expectations and notions and jerkoff attitude. I'M the one with the jerkoff attitude in my band thank you very much.

Dude, none of the people I chose are famous, Anthony Green being the most well known, and none of them are jerkoffs to my knowledge. Funny, though.

*They work great together, their time in Dinosaur Jr. has proven this... since the bands best albums included both members...

That's my dream band and I hope it happens, I don't care if they're all 40+ years old...<.<

I hope someone actually reads this because it took me forever to do...

Was a huge fan of Gus long before he joined Ozzy. When he joined it was basically, "Great, you just kicked out my second favorite guitarist and replaced him with my favorite."

Drums - Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory)
Bass - Les Claypool (Primus)
Guitar/Vocals - Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad, solo)
Vocals - Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle)

That would be the craziest band ever.

This is probably the first post where I like every band and person who someone listed. Nice.

I'm surprised more people haven't had Les, Devin or Mike in their "bands".
