allrighty. My wife and I are having a really hard time picking a boys name for our next child (if it's a girl, we have that squared away). So I turn to you, escapist forum. What are some good boy names?

PS. We have ruled out Sue and Skeletor ;(

I'd probably name him Ivar after my dad and grandpa. I have a thing for the name Eugene though, I think it's pretty.

Well I had always like the names James (although the name remain of this jeck back in high school), Ryan, Gareth or the popular name Jack (Jack Sparrow, Jack Bauer, Samurai Jack etc).

I suppose you could look up at some child naming websites since they provide history and meaning to each names.

I dunno, "Clarion," I suppose. I plan on having a girl, anyway, boys are way too much trouble. Also, I'm not going to be naming them conventionally; I"m going to think up my own names.

I am pretty old school, so probably either Johan or Sebastian. Though Chris has always struck a good chord in me. Oh, I'm Norwegian and here we pronounce names a bit different sooo... Yeah :p

Aloyisus! Pronounced aloe-wishus. It's rare and rather pretty and altogether badass because it is Mr. Snuffleupagus' first name! LOOK IT UP AWESOME. Oh, also is the name of the Italian patron saint of students, so hello good grades!

Depends whether you care much about etymology/history of the name or whether it needs to be 'unique'. Also, what root nationality of the name are you after? (Most popular names are English/German/Hebrew/Celtic.)

I'd give my son the middle name of 'Deimos' and raise him to an intimidating SoB. First name: Lucian.

However, you're not me, so a 'proper' idea would be: Maximillian Constantine.

I would recommend looking what boy names are popular this year, and see if one is to your liking.

Personally, I would go for something like Liam or Ewan or maybe from one of your fathers middle names.

That's easy, Alexander. Seeing as that's what I already named him. I wanted Gabriel, but the wife wasn't going for it.

I really feel sorry for your future children. Unless that was sarcasm, which I really hope it was. Remember, you're placing a label on a human being, one people will have to say to their faces daily. It was hard enough for me in elementary school needing to explain to all adults I was "Catie with a 'C'". I STILL have to do that, though it doesn't bother me as much as it did.

I'm not saying you need to pick the most popular name out there, but please, be conscious of what you're doing. One of my favorite names for a girl is Ophelia, but I won't use that because of high school boys. "Can I get a feel, OFEELYA?"

To answer the OP - I would pick a strong, multi-syllable first name that you can easily nickname. William, Charles, Christopher, Daniel for the first name, and a suitable middle name that sounds good with the first name. Also, you might want to consider your own ethnic and cultural background. If one or both of you is Irish in any way, pick an old school Irish name like Liam or Kieran.

My personal choice for a future son is Dante, EA's butchering of the classical title non-withstanding. It's a good old Italian name, and to me it sounds dignified and strong. Its unique without being "Omuniquie" which is the name of a child I've met. Along with Tequila, a lovely little girl with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Whatever it is, please, make it classy.

Whatever you choose, for the love of God, don't spell it in a stupid way. Don't do Kole, or Jaymes, or Darrinn, or Marck, or Alin, or Willyam, or Kristofer, or Mikeal. The poor kid will never see his name spelled right until the day he dies. Oh, and I'd stay away from names that you can't tell how you spell them by the way they sound. Like Sean. Or Shawn, or Shaun. Seriously, people have ruined this name. And the only Seans I've known have been douchebags, anyway.

And another thing: Test the name for ridiculousness. The best way to do this is to ask one of your friends "So what do you think of ______?" If their first response is "What?" "Huh?" or "How do you spell it?" then that probably means the name is too ridiculous. Because if that is how your friends react, imagine how random strangers (or schoolteachers, or people who are interviewing him) will react when he tells them his name.
