If you hate CoD, why do you keep buying it?

Don't hate COD at all, but I am so very tired of it. MW2 was lots of fun, but had some pretty significant flaws which made for a game of comparatively lower quality than COD4; it was an underwhelming installment to the series once you got past the 'shiny new' factor.

I picked up BO and enjoyed it also and liked how they balanced the MP, while adding a few new innovations to the RPG system. Having said that: I'm really sick of the kill-streak system, and some of the ridiculous absurdities, such as being knifed off screen. I played it for a few months and uninstalled.

BF:BC2 is another matter entirely. I have had the game since day one and it hasn't grown old on me. It feels like a BF game, but adds so many cool things like destructible environments.

I'm not digging military FPS games, but I am really looking forward to BF3 if it can take all the things that made BF2 and BF:BC2 great and successfully blend them together. COD just feels superficial and uninspired.

*Edit*

I'd like to add that the COD community is full of pretentious dicks and racist/homophobic morons.

It's a safe buy. Tons of people dont have enough money to make risky buys such as Vanquish or Mirror's Edge not knowing for sure if they'll like them. CoD is always a safe bet, you'll know you'll play the singleplayer, enjoy the co-op and probably get some weeks of gametime out of the multiplayer.
COD is not a safe buy, even the online is extremely lacking in features, the games don't even have proper clan support. The gameplay of the COD is a simplified FPS that is very polished. I know going in I'm at best going to get decent gameplay. I'd rather take a chance on a game that could have great gameplay than one that 100% for sure won't have great gameplay. Mirror's Edge and Vanquish are so much better than any COD game.
I agree that CoD isn't much fun, and that Vanquish and Mirror's Edge are tons above it, but that doesn't mean I don't understand WHY people buy CoD. For them it's a safe bet that they'll get enjoyement out of the game for a few weeks 100% guaranteed. With CoD they know day one what they're getting them selves into, but with other games they might not.

I've never bought one, as I don't like the FPS genre except for TF2 (which I haven't even played in months now). I don't see it as some evil thing, nor do I see its fans as being worse than anyone else. If you don't like these games, they are very easy to avoid. So I'd save my hate for something that's worth the energy.

Call of Duty is a series that appeals to the lowest common denominator. It doesn't require a lot of thinking to get a kill or two, and it's designed so that even the most "newbish" players can get in there and at least make some progress. It's forgiving to those who aren't very good, and offers very visceral rewards for any effort whatsoever.

I don't exactly dislike the franchise. I still play MW2 with my friends, but only offline in split-screen when we're feeling like shooting each other. But for my own online gaming, I've moved on to more in-depth games.

I prefer tactical games like MAG, which offer a more thoughtful approach and more options for tackling objective-based gameplay. Deathmatches just don't hold the same appeal that they used to since I've grown up a little.

Some people just like to kill, kill, kill and that's their only goal. For me? Your KDR should be a means to an end, not the end itself. You don't play a game of football with the only goal being to tackle everybody on the opposite team over and over again. You use your positions, your skills, and your finesse to work with your team to achieve a specific goal, and that's the kind of teamwork and objective-based play that seems to be missing from the COD series, even in their add-on game modes.

I could go on, but this is already getting a little longer than I meant it to. In short, COD is fine, it's fun to tool around with, but at the end of the day, the experience is more shallow than playing a more tactical and teamwork-centered experience.

That's mostly Black Ops.

OT: I love it. I buy it every year, first day and I don't even care for online that much.

I understand why people buy COD, they know exactly what they're getting and everyone probably has several friends that buy COD as well. I personally don't understand why people buy the same mediocre game every year, you're guarantee mediocrity, and that's all. The single player can actually be an extremely entertaining but short experience; however, the online is just so weak, and that's what people buy it for. For me, Vanquish was not a gamble in anyway. Once I saw the first video of it at E3 last year and saw who it was being made by, I knew it was going to deliver; the question was how awesome would it be not will it be awesome. Plus, you get free demos to try a Vanquish or Mirror's Edge. I don't think Activision releases COD demos and they especially don't demo or beta their multiplayer, which is what most people are buying it for, I think a lot of people really hated MW2's online compared to COD4 and WaW, I couldn't stand the bullshit that was MW2 online when I just played it for a couple hours at my cousin's place.

Well, I bought CoD4 because it was actually good.

I skipped WaW because it made my eyes sore for some reason... it looks good, but I couldn't look at it for too long.

I bought MW2 cause I THOUGHT it was going to be... good.

And I bought Black Ops because it looked promising given that the developers fixed alot of problems... they didn't.

For MW3, I will not buy it. I will borrow the game for a week and give it back to my friend.

I'm braindead, so I've bought COD3, MW, MW2, WAW and Blops.
I like things about them all, but they are the cheese sandwich of games.
You know what your getting.

MW2's split screen / co-op, spec ops was awesome, and really challenging.
World at War introduced Zombies, which at the time was novel, as these days zombies are as
common as taxes
Black Ops, wasn't so much Black Ops as Crash, bang, wallop, nuke, in fact these black ops
were so out in the open they took the piss out of itself.

MW3 may well break the back for a lot of gamers, as from whats been suggested, Activision and Beachhead are planning to introduce various ways of 'milking the cow', although it calls this 'milking', 'cash induced incentives' and believes that the content will be worth the money.
Obviously £40/$60 of DLC isn't good enough anymore.

I don't. My stepdad does. Does that mean I hate it? No. Does that mean I'll buy any of them of my own accord? No.

I hated MW2, so I didn't buy it, played it at a friend's house. Black Ops was made by another studio so I gave it a shot, while the story was interesting, the multiplayer was godawful. All this 15 bucks for 5 maps business did nothing to endear me to them either. I am NOT giving IW another shot.

The nitwits out there buying these games and Madden games are in the majority you know, but don't presume we all here are on that bandwagon idiocy....-/

The only one I have is CoD 4 for mac, it was on sale on steam once for like 5 bucks. So I thought like why the hell not.
But further than that I'll never buy another, CoD 4 wasn't a bad experience since all I did was play with the rest on my school on the school network server.

Because its fun

All those who believe they doing some sort of 'noble and righteous' thing by not buying/playing it are hugely mistaken in thinking that they make some sort of a difference by not doing so, and have completely lost sight of what games should primarily be.

I don't. Not any more.

I gave the series one last chance with Black Ops. Played it. Threw the disc in the bin.

Not that it will matter. The people who post on forums about how they don't like CoD are not representative of the average consumer.

"Fun" and "entertainment" are subjective experiences. Putting them in bold won't change that.

I have played CoD games. I did not have fun. I was not entertained. Rather, I was bored and irritated by turns.

I don't think I'm doing something "noble and righteous", I don't think I'm making a significant difference. I'm simply saving money by not buying entertainment products that consistantly fail to entertain me.

Swore off Call of Duty after World at War. Pleased about it too.

Like others have said, Call of Duty isn't bad, it's just mediocre. Considering it's mediocre and also considerably expensive I don't think its worth my money so I don't buy it. Simple. To be perfectly honest it looks like I haven't missed much either.

Also, I saw a lot of press coverage for Blops. Most of it was suggesting that Blops is the pinnacle of gaming, the best the medium has to offer. That's like putting a Bay blockbuster up as the epitome of cinema or a Dan Brown novel as literary genius. All of the above are entertaining sure, but all are without much substance and just serve to act as dumb fun. That annoys me.

Thing is it probably would be a game I'd buy a year or so after release once prices go down but that's another thing about the Call of Duty franchise - the games don't go down in price. Certainly not to a level where I would consider buying it. MW2 for example hasn't gone down in price yet in NZ game stores. That's $120. Why the shit would I pay this price for a game that's almost two years old and already has a younger brother? Modern Warfare the first which was released in 2007 is still $98. Steam's more of the same, Activision seemingly don't want people to buy their game anything less than full price.

I don't exactly fall into this category because I never actually said I wouldn't buy another CoD. I did say I wouldn't buy another Treyarch game after buying Call of Duty 3, because that game proved they were terrible developers. I've kept that promise to myself. I fell out with the franchise as a whole after MW2. I've always hated Call of Duty's multiplayer because it's utter shit, and if you didn't start playing on day one then you'd better enjoy playing "die every five seconds because everyone else has access to better load-outs than you," which made me get really sick of people telling me that the multiplayer makes up for it. Because it doesn't. At all. And of course they can't be bothered to impliment a skill based matchmaking system like Halo. That would just be too damn convenient. This means you're matched up with someone who's incredibly good at the game, or incredibly terrible. But I bought Modern Warfare 2, because I loved the first one so much for it's awesome single player campaign, and pretty much every review site and magazine in existence told me that the single player was just as good as the first, so I bought. Was that ever a mistake. I definitely won't be making a day-one purchase (if I'll be buying it at all) on MW3, partly because it's not the same Infinity Ward, and partly because the second was so disappointing.

You are aware that the people who say such things make up a loud minority of people as opposed to the millions of people who the supermajoirty who don't say these things and buy the game? Believe it or not there are enough people in the world that those internet guys can chose to not buy the game and it can still sell tons of copies due to all the pother people who do buy it.
