Having just had my ass kicked mercilessly by Geckos for the last hour I came to the realisation the Fallout 2 is... incredibly hard.

It's so hard that it makes Fallout 3 look like Fable 2 in comparison.

This seems to be the general rule with sequels, they get easier as they go along, partly due to improved play mechanics, partly due to the trend for games gradually easing up on the player these days.

MW2 on Veteran was a lot easier than COD4, FEAR 2 was easier than the first.

What other sequels have you played and then had your ass handed to you by their predecessors?

Did you have more fun getting annihalated or breezing through?

And do you know any series that have worked the opposite way?

Fallout 2 and 3 have very little in common, but yes: Fallout 2 is a tough game to beat up straight, if you don't cheat at all.

I'm getting destroyed on easy mode. I watch helplessly as three geckos crowd around me and my poor HP goes hurtling towards zero... I suck so bad at turn based combat.

Any of the Guitar Heroes after III, and Prince of Persia. Also Ninja Gaiden in my opinion.

One series I can say that retained its difficultly through all its veriations is Killzone. From the original on the PS2, Liberation on the PSP, and 2 on the PS3 they were all a pain in the ass on the hardest difficulty. But I love them all for the challange.

Same game; Fallout 2. It's the only game in which I've actually managed to get killed during the tutorial. I started out really bad. Then I got better, the it went to shit again after I actually started progressing in the plot (for days I had been stuck as I couldn't find Valut 13. Turns out I completley bypassed the computer with its location). Though to be honest what made me rage quit wasn't the difficulty but rather the absurd glitches that kept making the game ridiculously hard. Between my partners stupidity, their ability to randomly teleport right up to Enclave troopers, my guns tendency to mysteriously devour spare ammo, and the regenarting health I got fed up. I was assaulted with some of the worst glitches imaginable.

People say Fallout 3 was glitchy, but even with all the official and fan made patches Fallout 2 still turned into a nightmare.

Oh yeah, invest in small guns if you want to live ( I can't imagine getting anywhere without small guns in Fallout 2). Invest in gambling if you want to waste skill points.

Well, first things first. Gaming is more mainstream now, which means not everyone who buys a game has über-1337 skillz to complete them.

I think that games should actually embrace the overpowered-ness of player character, having 1-on-100 fights and such. And to please people who say it's "too easy", said crowds of enemies can be made of adamantium on hardest difficulty.

Having beaten Ninja Gaiden 2 on my 360 and the last week trying to beat Ninja Gaiden on the NES I can happily report that the original is harder

...MUCH harder
Hell Ninja Gaiden 2 was just a hack and slash game, use the block button enough, magic at the right time and dodge and you would be fine
The NES version has infinitive re-spawning enemies, some of the most "bullshit" jumping sections, ridiculous boss fights and I had to do this with a joystick, not a controller. It was painfully hard

Oddly the AVGN reviewed Ninja Gaiden this week, 2 days after I started playing it

It was nasty alright, but not as bad as Ghouls and Ghosts.

OT:

Just though of another: GTA4.

It was sooo much more forgiving than San Andreas or Vice City.

Halo series.
Left 4 Dead 2 and Gears of War 2 are about the same as the first ones..
Mass Effect 2...it's easier cuz it's more of a shooter, but it's also a bit harder, cuz it's auto heal, and that game is easier with manual heal..plus the Level cap is 30 whereas ME1's level cap was 60. it's a lot harder considering you don't level as much, so there isn't as much to help you in the long run. Hardcore is actually hard...Hardcore on ME1 was easy...Hardcore in ME2 sucks royally in comparison...dropping 30 levels...bullcrap..

Alright then, I haven't got anything to play until the 9th. I shall take your challenge of Ghouls and Ghosts

Total Annihilation, I have a AI mod on it too, but struth, that game rushes and kills me on Easy!

Once I get a good resource income I can become unstoppable, but getting there is like wading through syrup!

I'm halfway through ME2 on Hardcore at the moment and yes... it's very challenging.

The only part that really frustrated me so far was fighting the two Scions together on the colony rescue mission.

Those ground pounding attacks are beyond cheap.

Good luck...

Mario 3 was bastard hard too on the NES. World 8.. shudder...

And then Mario World was much easier than the previous 3 (or 4, if you're being pedantic)

I shall add Mario World but I played Mario 3, wasn't too bad. Nowhere near as bad as Megaman or Ninja Gaiden

It might have been just me, but I didn't find that game difficult. The again, action games are kind of my thing in general.

Mass Effect 2 is generally easier, but that's because the mechanics work a lot better and the AI is less frustrating. The main reasons I died in Mass Effect weren't because of challenging combat sequences, but because the game was quite buggy.

Star wars jedi knight 2: jedi outcast is a so nuch harder then jedi acadamey, but that maybe because you don't get your forces powers untill about the third stage and it had a lot more enemies with weapons the lightsaber couldn't block.
