Yeah everything psx era and beyond is just ridiculously easy. Games used to be a lot harder and yeah part of it was because there was only so much you could do and more gameplay mechanics allowed for more ways to do an "easy mode". All these mechanics though I usually have to set it on the hardest difficulty and even limit myself just to get some challenge from today's games. That's not to say they don't have their moments.

Having beaten Ninja Gaiden 2 on my 360 and the last week trying to beat Ninja Gaiden on the NES I can happily report that the original is harder
It was nasty alright, but not as bad as Ghouls and Ghosts.

OT:

Just though of another: GTA4.

It was sooo much more forgiving than San Andreas or Vice City.
Alright then, I haven't got anything to play until the 9th. I shall take your challenge of Ghouls and Ghosts

[sub][sub]I'm worried people might think I'm a masochist for playing all these hard games[/sub][/sub]
Good luck sir, Ghouls and Ghosts is a fucking toughie.

Both Max Payne games are easy on the first one or two difficulties. But while Max Payne 2 is a joke on the highest difficulty, the original will make you save often and wonder where did your health go :)
I played the first difficulty and died so so so many times.
though 2 made the decision to make bullet time regenerate on it's own, meaning that you can use bullet time in every fire fight. But to me that was the only way it was easier. that and so far i haven't had any of those stupid blood pattern dream mazes.

Legend of Zelda had a bit of challenge to it. None of the newer ones do. (OoT had some slight challenge if you had no idea what you were doing, but once you know it off by heart :()

Unfortunately it was like the easiest NES game ever. Excellent, though.
Easier than Kirby's Adventure? o_0 Sorry, but I find that hard to believe.

Devil May Cry.

DMC3 and DMC4 are a slight challenge on Dante Must Die mode. But if you go back to the first game after playing either of those then you're going to get your ass kicked.

Hard.

Over and over again.

Looks like Fallout 2 is getting quite a few mentions. I can't argue with that. I've played it for years now, so I'm very familiar with it, but at the moment I'm attempting a playthrough with a character whose Strength and Endurance stats are set to 1.

I'm literally saving after every turn in combat, haha.

Far Cry.

Makes Far Cry 2 look like a damn childs toy.

And I found FEAR 1 harder than 2.
Mainly because the AI in FEAR 1 was really, really good and constantly kept me on my toes. Always watch your back, because they will sneak behind you if they get the chance.

I don't know how to compare Mass Effect 1 and 2. The first one played more like an RPG with third-person-shooter elements, and the second one was a Third-Person-Shooter with RPG elements.

It's not even out yet (but we all know it's coming), but I'll just toss this out right now. Dragon Age: Origins is a lot harder than whatever sequel it get a few years from now. Hell, you don't even need to go for a sequel to have an easier time; DA:O version 1.02a is a lot easier than 1.00!

I never ran out of bullet time on the first game, thanks to the broken uh, flipside rolls, or whatever those are called - the moves Max does when you hit left/right + space. The mobsters can't hit you while you're doing them, unless you're in the very corner of the room or something. Their targetting just doesn't go that low xD. That was fixed in MP2 but the fights got a lot easier somehow, as a whole. There were still a few difficult fights, or fights where it's too far to aim correctly, but it felt nowhere near as challenging as in the first game.

And I take it that if shooters aren;t your cup of tea you'd find the above paragraph mostly nonsense and hate me for it xD

Any of the Guitar Heroes after III, and Prince of Persia. Also Ninja Gaiden in my opinion.
are you joking me? the old ones are cake to me, i can do just about every song in my sleep, while the new ones i can only do half the songs on expert

ninja gaiden tho...holy piss, i screamed like a little girl running away with no HP left

also one i'd like to add is getting raped on some of the old star wars games..like shadow of the empire, there were a few levels (such as IG-88) where he would just annihalate me on hardcore... then i play stuff like battlefront II and force unleashed and those are cake walks compared to it
Eh, I guess that's true. Two wasn't too hard, but GH III on expert took me a long time to beat. The songs on Guitar Hero World Tour and onward focus on songs that will be fun for all instruments, not just difficult/fun on the guitar, resulting in easier songs (if you're just playing the guitar).

I agree with Shadows of the Empire, but I think it was partially due to the N64. If it was released on PC today or any console with two thumbsticks, IG-88 would be in trouble.

yeah i guess i see where you are comin from, they concentrate on the song as a whole now instead of just the guitar..still just saying, some of the note combinations on the new ones my brain can NOT compute, while the old ones i shit on

yeah you might be right, he was the biggets pain in the ass with one joystick, ESPECIALLY when he was jumping around the whole fucking room so you couldn't see his ass, and everything was garbage so he blended in half the time, not to mention the little pee shooter laser they give you to use compared to his flamethrower

enough rant =]

I thought Final Fantasy I and II were a lot harder than any since. After about VII or so, they got a lot easier. In I and II, you could get your ass handed to you just walking around.

Devil may cry is MUCH more difficult than either Devil may cry 2 or 3. Dante in two though was absolutely OP.

Ghouls and Ghosts is harder than Super(I think)

Mario bros is more difficult than Galaxy

Prince of Persia is more difficult than Sands of Time(don't let the speed runs on youtube foul you)

God of War 2 was soooo much easier than 1
That's because the combat was a lot sloppier in God of War 1 and the locations were so limited and boring that it was hard to stay awake enough to be responsive. Two was a significant improvement.

That said... most games do seem to get easier. I found Mass Effect 2 (insanity) to be a lot harder than Mass Effect 1 (insanity) since there was no "immunity" ability that you could spam and become invincible in combat.

Going the opposite way... Baldur's Gate 2 was a lot harder than 1 and the BG2 expansion Throne of Bhaal was a lot harder than either... and any RPG since.

win, IF you hadn't been ninja'd a long ass time ago....

Anyway, I'd like to sponsor The Legend of Zelda: Adventure of Link and just plain ol' LOZ were the two hardest games in teh series.
