This just in, watching Fox news causes uncalled for violence, ignorance and stupidity from people. [/sarcasm]

I know the lawsuit about the cross statue is pretty foolish on it's own, but this is just ridiculous. I thought the ignorance and hatred people posted when Japan won the world soccer cup was bad. Can't you be sued for saying crap like that? Those are fucking death threats to a group of people based on lack of religious belief. And this is probably just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to religious lunitics.

Since this website is full of Atheists I want to hear your thoughts on the subject.
This isn't just a Fox news problem, or even a recent problem. Persecution on the basis of religion has been around as long as religion itself. Also Agnostic is the only entirely logical outcome from the god question. Both atheism and religions are based on a leap of faith.

You sir have just brought a smile to my face, cheers !
;) Let me just take that....*Takes smile off your face*

In reality Fox News is one of the most viewed programs in America.

:) Have fun sleeping on that bit of info! You're welcome!
I know that, still I didn't think of it as funny because it's sarcastic or anything , I found it funny because I found it ironic or to be more precise in the meaning "Who in they're right mind would watch that", just clearing that up even tho most people who actually bothered reading that post know the reason

That took bit to delete. What were we talking about? Oh yeah, atheism as a religion.
To put it simply although atheism as a life style choice is one that denounces all other religion and the existence of God, it is still a believe system. Only instead of foolishly trying to describe God (a being most often said to be able to do anything) as some stagnant form be it, he, she, it, or they atheism dismisses God as none-existent. Which is fine. As I stated you don't have to believe in God anyway. Atheism may not believe in God, but that doesn't make it not a religion. All that religion is is; a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. The Atheist believe concerning the cause of everything is that nothing caused it.

Personally, I too believe that God is nothing. I don't mean that I think God doesn't exist, but rather that God is nothing. :)

So, I have no choice of being in a religion?
Atheism is not a religion, it's the absence of religion and belief in god(s).

I know what you mean, but it's a weird kind of grey area, probably mostly due to semantics. Atheism is the belief that there is no God (or any other "higher power"). So it is a belief. Agnostics probably actually have a better claim on "no belief"... as they're not sure what to believe. :)

Religion is: (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/religion)
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2.a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.

So I suppose it would be possible for the belief in no God to be considered a religion... but given that very few atheists do the whole "devotional and ritual observances" part of things... I'm not sure most people (including me) would think of it that way.

Having said that it sounds like the people involved in this case (not the crazy facebook people) but http://www.atheists.org/ ARE a religion in that they have organized in order to spread their beliefs, partake in events celebrating their beliefs, and apparently even have a gift shop on their site selling things promoting their organization/beliefs.

Believe me, I am in no way against them doing so, more power to them, but the fact that they're doing most of those things places them in the same category as most religious organizations. And my guess is that unfortunately we'll find that they have some people in their organization almost as stupid as these Christians posting on facebook. Cause, you know, some people just be dumb.

According to what I've read, stupid people think they're smarter then others, while smart people think others are smarter. Then there are some obvious cases where people have dumb shit for brains.

Shall we conclude that people are retarded? Anyhow I'm smart in the way that I'm staying out of it.
(Edit: Above sentences are directed at the people shouting "Retard", "noob" and such similar things, aswell as those facebook posts.)

Oh yeah, forgot: It's often the most retarded people that gets heard, maybe that's why christianity is so huge? Just saying...

Maybe I should answer something aswell.
The fact that I'm an atheist doesn't change my life in anyway, my family is christian but we live totally the same way, just that they think a god may exist while I don't. So what was that about lifestyle, Imp Emissary?

Very true friend. Very true.
Also, nothing is black and white. It's all shades of grey, and depending on how you look at it (your perception) you will see it either darker or lighter.

Ah, life.

Very reasonable then. Question: Is it actually an Atheist organization making the lawsuit. If it is, then the only thing I find a little odd is that it would be atheists suing for more religious symbols to be allowed. I would think that individual religious groups would be suing for their own. Atheists would be uninvolved one would think.
Nah, it's Antitheists like me who'd want it removed. Atheists just want more faiths included because overt religious unbalance in public gestures make them uncomfortable. Including symbols from other religions makes the thing politically ambiguous whilst not inflaming the general religious populace.

Not this again. Where is this "Stalin was a militant atheist" idea coming from? Is it because he dissolved the church? Because I assure you that had nothing to do with atheism and everything to do with power over the masses.

Also like to point out that while American Atheists Inc have their uses, as an antitheist opposed to all religious organisation or institution (Note: Not private personal belief) I can't condone their continued existence once our societies are better levelled out. They're too much like a church and while atheism isn't a religion, it is a philosophical position designed to occupy the place normally taken by religion, and so is subject to the same rules.

And i thought atheists were tolerant to other religions. that was sarcasm. (This being a response to the many hateful comments) Seriously can't we all just learn to live with eachother here and not find things to hate but rather things to love and enjoy together, like the reasons we all joined here in the first place.

Being tolerant to religions doesn't mean one has to be tolerant to the kind of people that makes such comments. I know it was sarcasm, but still, had to be said.

Sadly no for two reasons:

1) Some people will always be horrible for one reason or another whether it be because of their beliefs or just because they find it fun.

2) Because we have a psychological defense mechanism (presumably in place to keep us from slitting our wrists) that often causes us to find some level of amusement (however bizarre that amusement may be) in things that should horrify us.

I'm afraid that the thing about tolerance is the fact that it requires the intolerance of intolerance (if that makes any sense to you).

I'd add something about hypocrisy in christianity, but on the other hand, I guess it's hard to post your supper menu in facebook without somebody saying he will kill you.

LOL this is supposed to surprise and appall me?

"Oh no, Christians on the internet said violent and ignorant things, next thing you know there will be youtube comments that say horrribly homophobic things!!!"

Yeah, I have a feeling that out of all the people that posted comments like this, only a small fraction of them truly believe what they say, and are really just throwing a hissy-fit.

As for those who actual believe what they say, I say just ignore them like the bullies they are.

And thank you for differentiating! They're just like the Westboro Baptist Church: thinking their "faith" puts them above the most basic rules of Christianity, such as love your neighbor and turn the other cheek. That they can be so openly hateful while still telling themselves they are on God's side, and legitimately believing it is beyond me. Jesus didn't teach us to be so unremittingly and unremorsefully hateful.
