Well I just wondered. If you want to work for Escapist, what sort of skills you need and what exactly do you do.
Well, to actually work for the Escapist, you need to get hired for an open position and be able to work at our office in Durham, NC. That doesn't tend to happen very often, and we usually post whenever we're trying to fill an open position (though for an editorial position, our writers tend to get first notice). Programming and art positions are only filled by permanent in-house employees, and our in-house editors (words and video) function both as. Anyone that wants to send in a resume can hit us at jobs@themis-group.com
Most people that write for us are freelance, and pitch one article at a time. In general, you need to be able to write well enough to follow the AP style guide, and be able to successfully write enough about your article idea to make the editors interested. You can find more information on our contact page [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/contact]. Being able to follow the instructions on that page is the first test.
Some writers work for us on a regular schedule - most of our columnists, for example. These usually happen because someone here already knows them and/or their work, whether or not they've worked with us in particular. Our news crew follows a similar process, though it's much more a matter of trust here.
Videos work similar to the regular columns, with the exception of the Film Festival. While we have definitely signed up series outside the film festival, in nearly every case they were with people who had already published videos regularly. A pitch for a video series works the same way as a pitch for articles/columns, but unless you have a pilot and other work to show you really don't have a big chance.
Guest Reviews are the biggest exception to all this, either for games or anime. You can read more about them in their User Reviews Forum Thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.67133]. Note that these are only written reviews - because of time constraints and to maintain a consistent quality level, our video review supplements are only done in-house.
