This is a thought that popped into my head, but what if for some reason some group on the internet decided to start attacking you.
Like hacking into your computer, posting your information on the internet, finding your address and harassing you; how would you react to all this?

Me, I can't really say for sure but I'd like to think that I would try not to let it get to me, I'd start off by using the internet less and I'd still try to live with my day to day. Again I can't really say for sure that's what I'd do, part of it would depend on how vicious the attacks would be.

I'm not really sure why this thought occurred to me, but it's a rather terrifying thought. If you've been on the internet for any period of time or someone who's connected to you has, then theoretically, you're open for being targeted. And not just you, but your family and friends, your place of employment or your school; if someone really wanted to they could make your life a living hell.

Hmm... wonder if there's been a horror movie made about this topic. In the right hands that could be something made extremely frightening.

I'd wonder why the hell somebody cared so much about me to go through all that trouble to get details that I reveal anyway if somebody asks.

If it stays confined to the internet, it would just be a minor annoyance, since I never use any real info about myself(except for email, which I would just change).

If all else fails, and if anyone cares enough, I'll just blame my cat for any porn found on my computer

That sort of thing happens all the time to social activists, rape/death threats is just one of those things that goes with the territory, unfortunately.

Occasionally people make good on their threats.

OH NOES! MY PORN IS NOW ONLINE....same place I got it. Have a fap brothers!

The only thing that might bother me is if a stalker was outside my house, desperate for me to love them. And only if its a man.
A woman stalker...different story.

As soon as they're brazen enough to call me or post my address online. I'm calling the cops. That reminds me a lot of P.Z. Meyers and of how he's cyber-bullied by a local crackpot named Dennis Markuze. You know the kind; the sort of guy who doesn't have a clue in the world and who still assumes that scientists are inherently wrong, especially if they're atheistic or agnostic.

The problem is, cyber-bullying falls in a legally gray area. It's not something local police forces could possibly legislate, seeing as the Internet is pretty much a non-location. So if a crime is perpetrated in Montreal against a scientist who's sometimes way the Hell back in Florida, in whose jurisdiction does that crime fall?

I don't remember the exact details of the case (and I'm sure someone else here does), but I think the trial boiled down to his mother agreeing that he needed psychiatric care and his sentence pretty much being a stay in the loony bin. Poor lady figured he wasn't doing anything wrong, which is the problem with cyber-bullying. You're using a computer and an Internet connection to commit your crimes, so you leave no physical evidence. You can be a hateful son of a ***** online for a spell, then log off and become Mommy's Boy over again.

So it's a really complex issue. Just asking us what we'd do if we were victims of it pretty much is the tip of the iceberg.

Sounds like a kickass name for a vampire game set in the future.

Like others have said I'd try to get away from the internet. I'd also change any information that may have been compromised. Delete my facebook, change my e-mail, change my phone number etc...

Beyond that I'd contact the police or FBI if the harassment was severe enough.

Finally it'd be the perfect motivation to get in touch with my congress person and start a grassroots movement to change the laws in the United States in regards to cyber-harassment. I'm still shocked that some of the thing that go on are allowed to happen or are even legal.

When it comes to hacking personal info its no longer "cyber bullying", its a felony.
Is very different from being called names.

I heard there's alos problems with the police side of things. It's easy for them to dismiss as some person getting over-sensitive, need to grow a thicker skin etc etc.

Except of course, when the person goes through with their threats, and it turns into "Well, you were warned, why didn't you take more precautions?"

E-mails? Sent to spam filter.
Facebook harassment? I don't know them so I wouldn't friend them, and if I did have them as friends I'd block em when they pissed me off.
Hacking attempts? Unplug from Internet for a couple of weeks, wait for them to get bored. If situation persists, call the fuzz.

The issue I'd have with it would probably be that they'd harass my family at their job or at home. They rarely settle with leaving just you as the target.
