Yes, but humans are also selfish, and most would refuse to accept change. Do you think people just accept being disabled straight away, if it should happen to them? If they suddenly developed a disability for whatever reason, do you think they'd just say "Meh, this is who I am, better get used to it"? They'd go and see if there was anything that could be done.
I'm generaliing a little; I'm sure there are exceptions, especially if the change is beneficial, but even so, there are some that would reject that as well. Really, I think this would apply to most creatures, sentient or not. It's all about survival.
Humans aren't special, but we think we are.
OT: If it was beneficial, I might just let it go, but I'd damn well research it as much as possible. If not, I might take the "coward's way", although I must protest at the terminology you use; suicide is practical is many situations.
