well, in the jewish laws, livestock-animals (cows, horses, mules, pigs, that group) is only kosher if the animal in question has hooves, and do something you latin-speakers call Ruminantia...
since pigs have hooves, but dont do the second thing, they're not pure, and therefore cant be eaten...

as for the reason they're considered filthy blasphemous animals? aside from the whole living-in-their-own-crap part, I guess it's because other cultures enjoy bacon and pig-meat so much...
