Hey, guys. Wanna know something?
You'll have to promise that you won't rage when I say it, though.
Promise? Okay.
When Aeris/rith/rijfksdlatidsafjlk died in Final Fantasy 7, I did not feel anything at all. Nothing. No tears. No 'SEPHIROFF HOW COULD YOU!!!'. Just, apathy. I honestly couldn't have cared less about it. Oh, and, you promised not to rage.
And yet, somehow, I honestly cried when Hinawa died in Mother 3. I mean, I already knew she was doomed, but there was something...about the scene... Maybe it's how it was broken to the player. The death wasn't all in-your-face; it wasn't like seeing the Masamune suddenly burst through Aerifjfdslkd's midsection. Heck, you don't even explicitly see Hinawa die. It's broken to the player second-hand. Perhaps, too, what Flint did after finding out might have helped - he goes straight to the second stage of grief and gets thrown in prison for it.
Whatever the case... that's why one of my favourite games of all time will always be a game with dated graphics, reams of text and no official international release. There are more reasons for a game not selling than because it was bad.
Something else interesting? Thinking about this game, and its prequel, last night made me cry myself to sleep. For the first time in my life.
