Dearest friends, acquaintances, and people I really should get to know, I am in dire need of your help! I've been brewing up an idea over the past few weeks for a project I need to do, but I seem to have hit a rather large roadblock. My pick-axe of ideas simply isn't enough to move this gargantuan, so I thought I'd ask you for your assistance in chipping away at this beauty!

My issue is this. I'm trying to capture the essence of humanity. Put simply, I'm trying to break us down to our bare bones, and piece us back together again. You see, we're at a slight disadvantage. I need to think of what emotions humans experience that define us as a species, and as individuals. While I know there are plenty we could discuss, the maximum my project (and spare time) can allow, is for 7, so we have to pick and choose the most important ones.

So far, all I can think of are love and anger, with depression being a maybe, I'm yet to decide whether I'll include it.

So, wonderful squatters of this fine establishment, could you pick the 7 most important emotions (in your opinion) that define human character. If you could do it in order, that'd also be amazing! (1 being the most important, 7 being the least)

Thank you so much in advance!

Edit!

For discussion value purposes, which emotion (that you can definitely say you've experienced), has sparked the biggest change in you, and why?

Well a good way to do it is with a Pablo Picasso esque style. Like painting a Different abstract person representing each emotion.

And hate has had one the biggest influences in my life seeing how majority of all my hard work and education derives from pure spite towards those who say I'm not good enough....

Funnily enough, that is exactly the approach I was going for when it came to producing the piece! Hate...I'll have to keep that in mind, the potential is great!

1.Optimism/hope
2.Fear
3.Anger
4.Love
5.Suprise
6.Sadness
7.Joy

Optimism has definantly change me the most. I constantly strive to better myself because of the hope of becoming far superior than others and my current self.

You're probably going to hate my response, but I'll say it anyway. XD

I think emotions in general are what makes us human. I've seen animals act ashamed when they're punished and happy when they're played with, they can obviously love people, but they can't experience the wide array of emotions that makes each of us unique.

Each person expresses or bottles up emotions differently. Each emotion affects each person differently. I'd say that if you wanted to hit the seven core emotions that express humanity as a whole, I suggest looking at the seven deadly sins and the seven heavenly virtues and examine those. I believe it was Socrates that said that there are no inherently good or bad emotions, there is only a diffeciency and and excess of each. The seven deadly sins and heavenly virtues are good examples of such things.

I could go into how self awareness is part of what makes us human, because we have consciousness and the ability to think ahead and not just the here and now, but that's not exactly dealing with emotion.

Although, I will warn you, you will probably eventually get someone on here saying that emotions aren't real and are nothing but a chemical response and so forth and so on.

I do recall something from my anatomy class though. We were talking about grief and no one seems to be sure what causes the physical manifestations of it. The thickening of the vocal cords, the slackening of the smiling muscles and the tensing up of the frowning muscles and so forth and so on. Although we apparently get the same reaction from love as we would eating chocolate. Not sure how that one works.

This is by far my favorite post of the day!
I honestly do believe that emotions aren't just a chemical reaction.

While that isn't entirely what I asked, it certainly is food for thought, and I love you for that response! It's definitely something I'll take in to account! I feel somewhat out of my depth here, seeing as the concept I'm tackling is something waaaay beyond average understanding, and I'm simply your average joe!

Also, your anatomy class sounds very, very interesting.

I would say greed. Take say, wolves as an example. One or two wolves won't horde food and keep it away from the rest of the pack, everyone gets a bite. There have been cases where animals have shown what would be described as greed but most certainly not on the scale of humans. I gotta say, sharing doesn't seem to be in our nature any more.
