Interesting question, this is much harder than I thought. To be fair though, my knowledge is pretty much restricted to Marvel comics, so I don't know if that makes it more difficult.

At first I thought Carol Danvers, but... yeah, the whole kidnap/rape/pregnancy thing.

Then, for reasons known only to my subconscious, my brain went to Scarlet Witch. I don't know what's wrong with me.

Maybe Sif? I've always fancied being an Asgardian warrior, after all.

Hmmm. Just realised there's no particular reason for me to stick to female characters. Maybe I'll post again if I think of a male one I'd prefer.

Onomatopoeia. Such a cool sinister villain, and really not that much bad has happened to him yet. He's eluded Green Arrow, and Batman (twice)

As far as villains go he's really one of the more successful ones. He's killed a lot of people, suffered very little comeuppance, and apparently he has a pretty normal, stable home life.

...hmm...maybe that my choice is a psychotic killer of good guys who cheats on his wife is something that should have me looking into my own life...

Honestly, I was just trying to think of a character I liked who didn't really go through a lot of bad stuff.

I'm sure if I thought harder about it I could give you a better answer.

Did somebody say WOLVERINE?

Why, I do believe somebody said WOLVERINE!

I only watched the movies and that dude doesn't look very happy with his life.

Since i don't read comics i'll cheat and pick the main character from a manhwa called 'The Gamer', so far his life was pretty good and his ability is awesome (being able to level up in real life, learning martial arts techniques just by touching the manual, etc.)

I think this sums it up nicely.

Barring them doing any stupid crap with him, New 52's Superman. He's nigh immortal, and he's with Wonder Woman, so no damsel in distress nonsense (at least, nothing that wouldn't potentially kill him too).

Were I female, I would pick Squirrel Girl, simply to have the satisfaction of having beaten every powerhouse in the universe, haha!

Haven't read much in the way of manga that doesn't end tragically for the heroes...so I'll have to think about that one...

Well, that warp spasm looks like it would be horrible, for starters. And you have to deal with his sidekick...

I was going to say Ms. Marvel (the alcoholism isn't great but nothing wrong aside from that), but having to live through their experiences? All the Rogue-induced coma, the time-travel incest pregnancy, and the terrible helmet hair of her current costume, bleh, no. [EDIT: Bah, beaten to it!]

So let's say Supergirl. Not the one who died in the 80s, the New 52 one, who... got dismantled for parts by Cyborg Superman last time I read her. Crap. This is hard.

On the one hand, that's true. On the other hand, adamantium claws.

Vandal Savage, true immortality and enhanced intellect. Plus from the comics it seems that he's able to cope with the boredom that can set in when you're doing the ever-living thing.

And speaking of Ever-Living second choice goes to Mumm-Ra. Just nap in your sarcophagus until something interesting happens or you want to mess with some people then get all magically roid-ragey. Good times. Good times.

Oh I don't know. The warp spasm gives him the power to slaughter enemies in their hundreds(he didn't think it too many)so that's pretty awesome if you ask me.Plus having Ukko around gives you someone to hit if you get angry or frustrated

I'd have to go a different route and choose one of my all time favorites, Nightcrawler AKA Kurt Wagner. For all the things he's endured in life he's still got a pretty positive outlook and is generally a pretty good guy... demon... whatever. Still he's not uber-powered (something I'd probably take too far) and he's had some pretty cool adventures in his time with Excalibur (probably my favorite X-team of the 90's). And his end was tragic but it seems he was rewarded for denying a demonic nature, and living an essentially good life.
:) Happiness when a character gets a good end and isn't needlessly retcon-resurrected.

I wanted to say Jesse Custer on basis of him being a total BAMF and the Word of God, but his life, save for a year and a half in addition to the events that cover the comic, his life was utter shit. So definitely not him.

I might take the low route here and say "any male hentai protagonist" but that genre still features tons of effed up shit, so I'm gonna go with LOBO! A bike-riding interstellar musclebound bounty hunter with a terrific sense for zingers and balls big enough to shame Jupiter.

I'm going to side with you, OP, and choose Dick Grayson. The death of parents would be hard to deal with, but to be trained by Batman as well as becoming the first Robin, fighting the good fight as Nightwing and attracting gorgeous, powerful redheads would be worth it in the end. Plus, the New 52 Nightwing costume is badass:

On the Marvel side of things, I'd love to be Bucky Barnes. Losing my arm (and getting a bionic replacement), getting brainwashed by the Soviets into covert assassination missions against the country that I originally fought for would suck. Being trained by Captain America (and inherit the title of Cap in the future) and once again, attracting the affection of a gorgeous, powerful redhead would NOT suck.

Yeah, I like sidekicks that become bigger heroes.

I would probably say Ramona Flowers from the Scott Pilgrim series. Yeah, the whole evil exes thing would be a bit annoying to deal with, but on the other hand, being known as "The Ninja delivery girl" would be pretty sweet plus being able to travel through subspace would make things very convenient. I wouldn't want Scott Pilgrim as a boyfriend though, I would ditch his ass quicker than anything.

Lobo

Not the new douche Lobo, but straight up, no non-sense 'Bastich' owning Lobo. Smoking Cigars and taking bounties and saving space Dolphins!

The trouble with the Endless is that they are halfway colored by the humanity they have such influence on. Desire has little morality by nature. But hey, if you can swing it, I say all ahead full on that one.
That is a bit worrying. I suppose that's part of Delirium's tragedy. I wouldn't want to become the kind of manipulative... individual that Desire is.

Still, Destruction is proof that the Endless can, if they put their minds to it, define their own lives.
You wanna know the REAL tragedy? Delirium might change again for the better, but Destiny? He's screwed. He's so stuck to his book that any change from him actually splits him into parallels that eventually turn back into one. He has no way out and no means of adaptation.

It was a brilliant design choice to show Destiny literally chained to the book he carries. Makes me wonder whether to credit Gaiman or the artist for that little touch.

I love that series so much.

If I had to guess, I'd say that Neil gave McKean - It WAS McKean, right? - the general idea of them all and though there's been alot of art-shifts in the comic, they remain the way they are overall. Destiny has always been the cloaked and (somehow) blind reader of a book which is chained to him, so I think we give Neil the design credit and Dave the art credit, as per usual.

In some ways (unless I'm an idiot and missed it) I am surprised that no one has mentioned my choice. In other ways (similar to the issues presented by the Endless) I am not. At the moment if it where possible I would chose to be Doctor Manhattan.
