Wakefield high street has GAME, HMV, Ninja Games, Grainger Games and CEX, all within a stones throw of each other so when I buy games I usually do a lap to see which are cheaper and usually GAME are the most expensive...

So yeah all pretty nice deals imo. A lot of the stuff was no cheaper. Hell some were more expensive than usual.(Uncharted 2 at £20) Pretty much anything that was a big name was same price (Mario, Zelda, Uncharted etc)

On the downside, the reason I was in there in the first place was to pick up a copy of the Jak and Daxter HD collection but not a single store (including HMV) had it because they all dealt almost exclusively in second-hand games.

I'm starting to see the issue with second-hand game sales now...

What issue would that be? Being sold out of something isn't unique to used game stores, especially when said store is going under and has everything on sale. If GAME is like Gamestop, then they sell both new and used so they are more likely to have a particular game in stock than stores than ONLY sell new.

Hmmm, I was in GAME yesterday in the Cardiff store, I didn't see any games that were that cheap but I did see Uncharted: golden Abyss for the PS Vita pre-owned for £42... A pre-owned hand held game costs more than a new console game. ¬_¬

Their site is doing some good deals, too. They were selling download-only DXHR (aka Steam codes, as I told my brother) for even less than the Steam Sales that was on at the same time. I'm a PC gamer, so I haven't shopped there since getting the CE of Starcraft 2 back in 2009 (and Brink, actually, for 50% off last summer).

GAME is dying, unfortunately. I hope someone else can come in and pick up the pieces.

Important business lesson in this kiddies. When your primary business model is to directly compete with or undercut your product suppliers, and you spend a decade thumbing your nose at them, you might not have the greatest degree of success when things go south and you have to go to them hat in hand begging for credit of better terms on financial dealings.

Game is effectively over. But you gotta figure that Gamestop is looking at the whole situation and is breaking a sweat these days.

One of the Gamestations I visited didn't even have a section for first-hand PS3 games, which makes finding new releases (especially ones with niche appeal like the HD collections) nigh on impossible.

That's great except that Game were never a used game store, they were a game store that offered trade-ins. There was a time when every wall was covered in new titles, and the second-hand stuff was in wire baskets up the back; it's only recently that they've made the shift to selling nothing but used, and it's because of that they can no longer sell new games because publishers are quite rightly telling them to fuck themselves.

If you had read my post properly, you'd not only have seen me mention the Gamestation that had no new PS3 titles, but you'd have seen me name drop stores like HMV, which sell all variety of media, yet the only section where they sell used goods is the games section and they have piles and piles of them whereas they have a few token shelves with new titles.

The only reason stores like this have new titles is so they can sell them at full price (£40), get them traded back in for a fraction of that(£20-£30) and then sell them second-hand at an only marginally reduced price to the first-hand copy, (£37.99) a taking that is pure profit since they don't have any overheads on that unit. It's backhanded and extremely shady.

My point had nothing to do with dedicated used game stores --they operate on an entirely different model-- which is why I didn't mention, say, Grainger Games.

I had no idea about GAME/Gamestation dying and me and my fiance walked into their store and saw that that they were just putting out the reduced prices. It's was seriously awesome walking out with a pile of games i'd been meaning to get and i didn't even break £30.

Some of the deals I saw the other day were crazy. My mate actually got DJ hero for a pound, and apparently that comes with the controller. I only bought Goldeneye for the Wii, originally £18 down to £8 pound, I think it was worth it.

I hope GAME and Gamestation pull through they're current troubles. Not only for the 10,000 employees who could lose their jobs, but also because it would suck that a huge portion of videogame stores shut.

I was in the Newport store the other day for no more than 5 minutes, and the same for gamestation. They were selling new games for twice the price of the internet; & old games for only slightly cheaper than new on the internet, but you ain't getting a code with that.

I went in on Thusday and picked up 7 games for £35 and never has a shop felt more depressing or more desperate. While the staff were putting on a brave face, the pricing of the stock (New games at full price, pre-owned prices slashed) shows how desperate they are and as someone who has shopped in Game for almost 20 years, I'll be sorry to see them go.
