Let's face it: Apple's various touch-oriented iThings are fucking awesome.

No, don't yell "Apple sucks," don't say the iPhone and iPod touch are just for consumer whores; if you've ever actually used one you'll know that they are undeniably cool. Apple is more than a master of its 'Shtick,' its a master at the art of combining design and functionality, and making both shine.

The iPod touch, if implemented properly, could be the best gaming device ever. I'm not suggesting it would ever happen, Steve Jobs would retire before letting his beloved technology fall into the hands of dirty gamer peasants.

iGame

Pros-

-Touch interface (duh). Designers needn't worry about the design of the controller: it can be anything they want it to be. Imagine "Phantom Hourglass," with two fingers and a kickass screen.

-Accelerometers. While only advertised as having the petty, superfluous ability to flip the screen when you flip the phone, they are in fact comparable to the Wii in precision. I borrowed a hacked iPhone from a friend, which ironically had a flawless Gameboy Advance emulator (controls were projected over the image,) and a marble-maze game. The marble rolled flawlessly as you tilted the device. Its basically a portable Wii.

-Hard-Drive, and digital Distribution. iTunes Game Store. Think steam, but better.

Cons:

-Price. $500 for 32gigs. Balls.
-You look like an asshole.
-Apple is too snobbish for this to ever happen.

I don't quite understand, with their switch to Intel, why they haven't delved into the gaming market. It seems like something they would be very good at, and i feel like they could perfect the console or gaming computer, much like they did the iPod and monster-mammoth-death-tower number-crunching mac pro.

UPDATE

Steve jobs announced the Developer SDK in a keynote today, demonstrating numerous apps which were developed in a short time, including games from EA and Sega,

EA made a live demo of spore on the iphone, monster editing and Accelerometer controls.
Sega of "Super Monkey Ball," open GL.

I'll post a link to the keynote as soon as it's up.

*shakes magic 8-ball*

I foresee an audiosurf clone that actually plays I-Tunes songs on your I-pod coming out very, very soon. It will let you steer by tilting the device in your hands or with conventional controls.

*shakes magic 8-ball again*

It will make a frightening amount of money.

I heard a rumor that Apple is interested in entering the gaming industry. It could be interesting.

The Pippin [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin] seems to have done to gaming what the Newton did to PDAs... made Apple withdraw from the market. It'd be interesting if I'm wrong and we see Apple become friendly to gaming again, but I have a grim feeling that that's not about to happen.

Apple is good at designing interfaces for consumer electronics however this does not actually mean that the product itself is of the utmost quality. That said I do wish they would take a serious look at the gaming market.

There have been rumours that Apple and Nintendo are working together to take Nintendo titles to iPhone and iPod Touch. Kinda cool, I guess.

I wonder if Google is going to follow through on these threats that they're going to enter the home computer market with a box of their own.

That sounds like piling the explosives by your own respawn point. If Nintendo did that, it would become the sworn enemy of the big, green box. I, personally, enjoy the fact that they are NOT competing in quite the same way. (As in: Microsoft is not in Japan)

How very mature of you Khell_Sennet. You are indeed both clever AND funny. Kudos!

And not too many times, Comrade, only the times when Apple releases an SDK which is almost guaranteed to make iPhone and iPod touch huge competitors for the Handheld gaming market, due to having the most powerful graphics support, and Digital distribution as the next step for games and movies alike. (See Xbox Live media center, Gametap, Steam)

In fact, they already announced the application process for distributing games via iTunes, in its own seperate "App" section.

As these forums are gaming, such would be appropriate wouldn't it?

As the happy owner of a jail-broken iPhone, I've already got go, chess and ScummVM on mine. There's also a number of Nintendo emulators available for the phone. I'd imagine once the SDK goes live, most of the GNU stuff will go legit, so you can just grab them off iTunes or whatever.

I don't really think it's in Nintendo's interest to work too closely with Apple, since the DS is still their hardware bread and butter, but I can definitely see EA (when did they get progressive?) and other publishers unmarried to specific hardware supporting it. I think Apple products have become ubiquitous enough among tech savvy early adopter types that it makes sense to dabble in their hand-held stuff.

Ok, last post here, here's the Keynote, go to around minute 45 to see "Spore" in action.

Go to 1:00 hours to see "super monkey ball" in full 3d, with accelerators controls. Fuckin' A.

That's absolutely amazing and awesome.

Also, the App Store completely rips off Installer. Hilarious.

e: Jesus, this is like Steam for the iPhone.

It just seems that we have a new thread about Apple and gaming at least every other week.
