Apparently I'm too stupid to understand the concept of it. There I trolled myself to start off so please reserve yourselves :p

Is the handheld device a wholly new console with games specifically tailored for it and completely new hardware? Or is it a handheld device where the games will still be made for the Wii, and you just use it as a plug-and-play device on the Wii?

Its a new console. What Nintendo showed was the controller. It is Backwards compatable with Wii games, but its a brand new home console.

Yeah they really cocked up the showing. I had trouble understanding what it was at first as well.

It's a console that was marketed entirely by the controller. I'm pretty sure there was only ever a single image of the console released at E3. Hint: major gimmick? You're not even going to be able to connect more than one of these special controllers at a time.

Who says you can only connect one?
Nintendo said the WiiU controller won't be sold separately. Yeah, that's pretty weird.

Well I'll hold out hope for it. Someone like me who's moved far away from his video game friends for work and only has the option to play online with them is well suited for it it sounds. Especially since I only have one TV in my possession and sometimes I'd like to watch Netflix or something while I'm playing games :p

You're not the only one, mate. I have a 50" HDTV, so why the fuck I would want to play using that bulky-ass controller is beyond me...

Up to the Gamecube, Nintendo was fine containing their little "innovations" to just stuff that would connect to the controller or what have you. Now it's just starting to get annoying. Every console/handheld has to have some gimmick central to the operation of the damn thing.
I'll agree with you mostly, but everyone's looking for the next big thing in games. It's kind of exciting to see all the new technology. We've just about reached the top as far as that goes with the most recent generation of machines, save a virtual reality device that's connected directly to your frontal lobe.

You can tell that most devs are nearly out of ideas, as every time I go to a store no less than half the shelves are stocked with FPS games. Back in the 16-bit days, a lot of games had a uniqueness about them and now the uniqueness seems to be coming in the form of the hardware rather than the software.

It's much like Hollywood, cranking out shitty movie after shitty movie that you've basically seen before all following the same basic text-book premise. So they're clamoring for new tech (IMAX, IMAX 3D, Bluray). It's all become very gimmicky when we're basically stuck without fresh ideas for the most part.

The very idea that you can't buy the controller separately is baffling to say the least - what if it breaks?

It's also a bit disconcerting if only one can be used per console - it pretty much (multiplayer-wise) turns the console into a HD Wii with an extra gimmick, as there's no way 4 people could see the tablet's screen at once.

Even though there is only limited information on the Wii U at the moment, if what we know turns out to be the truth of it, I may have a hard time justifying the purchase - and this is coming from someone who still plays their Wii on a regular basis.

I've always loved Nintendo but the Wii U is just set up to be their equivalent of the Dreamcast.

You're gonna need a Wii remote for the new console or at least some games, I've heard. If that is true (and my source was drunk at the time, lol) I see nothing but failure on the horizon. Boat loads of failure.

I love nintendo! That being said they are turning into a gimmick company.
Aw come on they're not gimmicky, they're innovative. Remember Virtual Boy? Just because you try something new that's a complete flop doesn't mean you shouldn't keep trying.
