I realised just a few minutes ago that when it comes to gaming, I must really like seeing myself in pain. Currently, I'm trying to figure out Dota 2. That's a pretty hard game in and of itself, but instead of playing against bots or with a few friends, I'm going it completely alone. Occasionally I hear things about the game and try to work with them, but for the most part I'm learning it entirely through solo queue PVP. If that doesn't make me the ultimate masochist, I'm not sure what does, but at least I'm the ultimate something.

In that regard, discussion value: recommend me something hard, preferably one where I don't have to raise the difficulty options for it to be hard, but if all you have is Dante Must Die, that's cool. Note that I own a decent PC, a Wii, DS and 3DS, and I live in Australia so that might limit my options slightly.

I didn't expect this many responses. On the other hand, I now have a much larger Christmas list. Here's all the games that I'm considering based on your recommendations:
-I Wanna Be The Guy: Gaiden (already downloaded)
-FTL: Faster Than Light (FTW: for the win)
-X-COM: Enemy Unknown (I already have UFO Defense)
-Rayman Origins (played demo, already interested)
-Dishonored (perhaps with Christmas money if I get some)
-Dungeons of Dredmor (cheap as heck, even with both expansions, so)
-Dark Souls (if the price goes down a bit; $70 is more than I'm willing to pay for a bad port)
-Shiren the Wanderer (thank every god ever that standard-DS cards aren't region locked)
-La-Mulana (was interested in before, since a game's never made me take notes on a piece of paper before...)
-Trials 2: Second Edition (played a few Flash 'bike' games, including that one with Spongebob-- REPRESSED MEMORIES COMING OUT okay I'm fine now.)

Probably won't get all of these right away, because I'm a cheapskate and I have a number of games to get through already: Borderlands 2 (planning to use that 'anarchy' tree on the DLC class), Dota 2 (not that you ever really 'get through' it), Ys Origin (those boss fights are completely nuts)...I also own Jamestown, Shank, Serious Sam (all of the main series, none of the indie spinoffs though) and Metro 2033 already, so I'll look back into those too.

And I just remembered that I've got a number of bullet hell shooters in my backlog. This is going to be fun.

Super Monday Night Combat?

You'd have to prepare your body well before getting into that game.

You may want to check out the rogue-like genre. These games generally feature perma-death, crap-tons of traps and mysterious consumables which may or may not kill you. They're all about survival in a world that is out to kill you. Games like Dwarf Fortress, Nethack, and Dungeons of Dredmor belong to this genre.

And heh, if you're new to them, and if you can find people to play against (which is difficult nowadays T_T), try playing Guilty Gear or Melty Blood against a good player going full blast. See if you can handle all the crazy pressure. XD

I remember going 0-40 at one point in Melty. The session was painful, but it left me hungrier than ever. I suppose I'm sort of a masochist too. Learning a new fighting game is generally painful, as losses come by very often.

Tried it, played a couple of games, lost interest. Besides, I also wound up with two victories for the two games I wound up playing. I suppose not having any rage over 'this s*** will not beat me' is why I couldn't get into it the way I did with League and then Dota.

I've heard some good things about Faster Than Light, as well...Maybe I might look into a few of those, then. And I've already played a few fighting games (never online though, because they were all pretty old ones), and I suck at all of them. Mostly because no matter what I do, I can never press the buttons fast enough to get a combo higher than 5 hits (which was from using a super.)

I've also heard, though, that Skullgirls has a decent tutorial, and I'd assume that the online community would be pretty active just after it comes out (for PC anyway...) It's that, more than the...aesthetic, that made me interested in it.

Thanks for the tips.

FTL - It's hard, but it's also (normally) fair.

God Hand - Not sure HOW powerful your computer is, but this game is pretty much GREAT.

Super Meat Boy is pretty tough as is They Bleed Pixels. FTL has already been mentioned and I love that title too.

It runs Skyrim on high specs. Not sure how much of a burden that is, or if that's anything to do with processing power (the change came when I put in a new graphics card), and I don't really want to buy a PS3 just for the sake of downloading it...Well, I'd probably get the DMC HD trilogy as well, but they're still bleedin' expensive.

Have Super Meat Boy, heard that They Bleed Pixels is pretty good, and yeah, more people than you (including myself) have brought up FTL. The acronym looks like it should be an emoticon of some sort, but it isn't. Weird, that.

But if you want REALLY hard go for one of them japanese bullet hell games cue Mushihimesama

How about Rayman Origins? It's a platformer that starts out fairly simple, but as you get further into it, you're expected to do all kinds of crazy stuff.

And then there's always I Wanna Be The Guy.

If you're okay with emulating snes games from japan, play Fire Emblem Geneology of the Holy war and Then, Thracia 776 with their respective english patches. Thracia especially will fuck you in the ass.

There is that game where you spread your hand out and have to stab between the fingers with a knife. That looks pretty masochistic. And insane.

Original X-Com on superhuman difficulty. Nethack without spoilers. Certain Doom wads on Nightmare.

Have fun!
