Hey Escapists. So I currently work for the County Council in IT and my contract is due to end at the end of this month, and they ain't renewing it. :(

I've applied for many jobs, here there and everywhere, most of which getting no response. I've applied for the forces (RAF) and I'm waiting for them to respond too.

The problem being I have a contract to pay for, but with no income it's gonna be hard paying £35 each month to keep that going.

Have any of you guys been in this situation before? If you have or haven't I'd like some tips/advice as to what to do next to keep some money rolling into my bank, to pay for such necessities (Even if that be the bare minimum).

Yeah I know I should get a job, trust me I've applied for many jobs. I'm just assuming I still wont have a job by the end of this month.

Highly appreciated as per usual guys.

Job Seekers.

It'll cover your tiny, tiny costs (I'm assuming you live with your parents and have no rent or bills other than the (phone?) contract) and then some.

Do you have any other skills, or hobbies you could monetize? The chain I worked at closed my store a few months back, and I have yet to find something to replace it. But I'm also involved in the ball-jointed doll hobby, so I've managed to pick up some extra money from sewing projects people wanted. It's not a replacement for a real job, but it keeps food in the fridge while I search, so that's good enough for now. Look to your hobbies. See if you can do something similar.

I've not been in the situation before, but the misses currently is, difference being you've got IT experiance, which is much more in demand than a degree in physics and experiance in waitressing. Look around online, there are loads of jobs going, look further out than you would normally just plan how you could get there (busses and trains are suprisingly useful). Keep your chin up, something will come along, might just take a while, and will probably be private sector as public is being stripped right down.

Yeah it's a phone contract. The problem with being on job seekers is that it will be on my record, and I'm not sure if I want that while applying for a new job.. I guess though, I would have to do that if all else failed..

Yeah I've thought about this, fixing broken Xbox's and selling them on, or building PC's and selling them on, but there is such minimal profit in doing that... :/

...what?

Sorry, what are you talking about? You'll get a P45 from your employer - you then give the P45 to either your next employer or to job seekers to confirm you are not working. I have no idea what you mean by a "record", and no employer is ever going to turn you down because you've been on job seekers.

You have no other costs besides a month £35? Shouldn't you have savings for that? >_>

Still in college with all costs covered, so I haven't really been in your situation. I had two paid summer internships at a consulting firm and I've got a computer consultant job when the semester starts. I've got a few thousand USD saved up in case I ever have to pay my own phone bill though, lulz

You haven't been able to find any IT work at all? Are you just asking local businesses or have you searched online?

Shit, that's a bummer. Is there any where near you where you can give blood? Know any family members who need odd jobs done for some quick cash (computers fixed, yard work, etc)? It won't be much, but maybe just enough to get by. Hope something comes along soon, man.

Fair point. I'm not sure, I guess it would be better than a bad credit rating... how much do you even get from Job Seekers, out of interest?

Minimal profit is better than no profit at all.

Unfortunately any family members live around 2-3 hour drive away, so it sucks coz' I live nowhere near any family :(

£35 a month? Mate, thats piss in the pool. Jobseekers gives you £54 a week and up. Not to mention they now do all they can to force you into a job, if only to get you off the thing.

Rules of the dole queue; they don't give a shit if you are jobless, but the second you start taking money they'll look harder than you will for something.
I'll consider it. How long does the process take from applying up to actually receiving the income?

Approx. a fortnight.

As you know you will be unemployed by the end of the month, you can apply now and as such have the money waiting, per se, when you need it.

In all seriousness though, so long as you are looking for a job rather than just moping around I see no shame in scrounging and sponging off everyone and everything around you as much as you can.

No money for giving blood in the UK, NHS and all.

but yeah, odd jobs always help tide you over 'till something comes along.
And son't be afraid to ask people outside of the usual process, you never know what might happen.

My opinion? Don't be so worried about stigma from JSA and take the help you deserve.

OK cheers, I might just do that.
