After spending years on this forum, it has suddenly dawn on my me, that the reason that i feel i stand out among the other game playing folks on the escapist, is because.

I'M AN OPEN MINDED GAMER

I just love games, you name a game, I probably like it. I can even cope, and have patience with various things that others would find game breaking, such as glitches, long loading, long tutorials, lack of story ect.

Hell, i even found some fun with sonic 2006, which as most people would think is a fucking disaster because it fails in a lot of key areas. I however looked passed all its various faults, and just took the game how it is, and not wishing of what it could of been like.

It's because of my open mindedness to gaming as a whole, it feels really painful to see all my favourite games get chewed up and spat on by various people on the forums. For example say Red faction guerilla, great game in my eyes, but not at all great to some. Some people will say how it lacks in story, has repetitive gameplay ect. I never found those things wrong about the game, I just took the rough with the smooth, and appreciated how much work was put into making the game.

I surely can't be the only person who is like this, so speak up fellow escapists, are you as open minded to games just as much as me. Do you have the patience to take the rough with the smooth, and to appreciate a fine game. Also do you enjoy a lot of games regardless of genre.

If so, please answer my question, are you a open minded gamer?

Lets just say that it's nice that you like everything because you appreciate that all games take a lot of work to create, but if everyone was like you developers would never have a reason to try and make games BETTER if people already thought they were good enough.

Criticism is what drives good things to be better and acceptance is what drives the status quo.

I'm open minded in the sense that I won't diss anyone if they like games I found awful. I also don't mind if people speak poorly about titles I enjoy, as long as it's clear they've tried it and can provide examples of why they disliked it. Folks have different tastes sometimes, and they are just as entitled to their gaming preferences as I am to mine.

Now if someone's making uninformed accusations about games they haven't even tried, that's a different matter...

No. I don't have time to be open-minded. If a game isn't great, it's time to move on to something else. Doesn't mean I don't like it, just don't have the time to bother. And it's hard for me to waste time on an okay game when I have dozens of other unplayed games lying around which could be great.

As for people, to each thier own. I have never cared.

I would suggest an open-minded gamer is someone willing to try a variety of genres and games without instantly dismissing them for whatever reason.

Not someone whose willing to suffer through poorly and/or lazily developed games. If you want games to improve (although, apparently you're not really bothered) you should be critical of them - that doesn't mean being an arse hole, but constructive criticism makes things better.

Lots of developers do pay attention to their forums and such.

I'm open minded in the sense that I'll give almost any kind of game a fair try, but I'm still critical of the games I play and I could never imagine myself just liking everything despite its flaws. I won't sit through a terrible film, I won't keep reading a terrible book and I'm perfectly willing to stop playing a poorly designed game and go complain about it on the internet.

Well, if you can enjoy the good aspects of most games, all the more power to you.

I do hope you can still recognize a difference in quality between various games though. Like some games implementing a specific game play element better, or telling its story more elegantly and such.

And being open minded does not mean appreciating everything equally. It means being willing to examine things properly and accept that others take other view on them than you; not refusing to take a stance yourself, or necessarily taking an all-encompassing one.

I'm not wishing everyone was like me, because as you said criticism makes the wheels in business turn.

This is a more personal level of understanding for me.

I take things into account in the developers point of view. Making a good game requires loads of back breaking hard work for years to make. I somehow appreciate that their are things that are way out of the developers hands, for example Obsidian was only given the tools from Bethesda to use when making New Vegas, and due to their lack of experience with gamebyro it was riddled with bugs. Also time constrains that makes many features promised previously a thing of the past, such as Peter Molyneux with the first fable.

I don't expect most people to understand this way of thinking, i just wanted to make people aware of as a individual this is what i feel about gaming.

Open Mind Likes everything. I think perhaps a more appropriate name would 'gaming slut'? And I don't mean that in a troll way or anything, I'm pretty much the same way. I'll give a lot of things a try, heck I'll play almost any game for a couple hours no matter how terrible it looks.

Yeah, obviously i can realise that games are much better than others.

For example the difference in quality between say Mass Effect and Alpha Protocol. Mass Effect may have a much better quality to it, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying Alpha Protocol.

I'm open minded in that I'll give pretty much anything a chance (game wise), and I'm not ever one to say "I play " and more that "I play games." I can play anything aslong as it's good, and I like both story and silly fun.

And yeah I do feel a bit out of place too since everyone else seems to like only a few genres each.

EDIT: Actually, that being said, there are many games that people here like that I never bother to give a chance. Not that I'm against them, but that I'm indifferent. Most games I buy are ones I am interested since investigating them after their announcement. The only time I seemed to deviate form this was recently when I had tons of free moeny so boguht some games that I wouldn't have otherwise. Still haven't played/bought things like Mass Effect though.

Great, then you have considerably more entertainment options to choose from than many other gamers. Quite fortunate I'd say.

Not as much an open mind as a forgiving one though. An open mind is giving a game the chance to surprise you; that it actually do so is not part of the deal.
